baptisms St Quivox ~1787.....

Post by pigwidgeon » Tue Jan 16, 2007 10:56 pm

Hi, I'm trying to find a baptism for a Samuel Young, born St Quivox, Ayr, approx. 1787, according to army discharge papers and death certificate. A search in OPRs on SP found no matches. Does this mean there are no surviving records from around this date, or may it be a transcription error or similar? We are planning a trip to Edinburgh in the spring and I'd like to know whether it might be worthwhile trawling through the registers at New Register House or not.
Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks

Petra

Hi Petra
According to GROS these are the existing records for:
6121 ST QUIVOX*
6121/1 B 1735-1819 M 1735-1819 D -
6121/2 B 1819-54 M 1820-54 D -
* See Appendix 1 under reference CH2/319

But there maybe gaps in these dates - any gaps are not indicated in the dates given.

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Petra

According to the source, Key to the Parochial Registers of Scotland, compiled by V. Ben Bloxham, Sadly you are not likely to locate a birth record in this parish in the year 1787.....unless you are one of the lucky 4!!!

St. Quivox and Newton -Upon-Ayr (612)
Condition of Original Registers: Births: St. Quivox - No entries Apr 1740-June 1772 except five entries 1767-71. Fragment of a page with part of entries for 1743. Four entries only from 1785-93.

Wish I had better news.

Best wishes
Jean

The St.Quivox entries though when they are there are in the main helpful & full of detail-still didn't find the Baptism of my GGGGreat-grandfather but I spent a very happy afternoon reading the film at my FHC.
Some sad reading & some detailed descriptions of "unknowns" found dead in the Parish-some cynic said it was in case they could be identified & their burial costs reclaimed! Not me I like to think they hoped that some poor grieving rellie might be able to identify their missing loved one!
