Hi All
While researching my Stewarts , I have come across a bizarre entry , well bizzare for me !!!
My relative William Stewart marries a Elizabeth McFarlane or Young on 21/8/1829 in South Leith. They later move to Glasgow and I can find them on the 1851 Census but not the 1861 Census.
I know Elizabeth Died before 1868 as their son William states his parents are dead on his marriage certificate. But I cant find a post 1855 DC for her.
What I am trying to establish is whether McFarlane is Elizabeth's Maiden name or is it Young?

Hi David,
I'll defer to the more experienced members, but in several wills I have the first surname given is the maiden name and the "or" one is the first married name. So that would mean her maiden name was McFarlane and she first married someone named Young before her marriage with William Stewart.
All the best,
Sarah

Hi David
like sarah i would say that the macfarlane is her maiden name and she has been married to a young before she married william stewart.
i have found a coulpe of entries on the IGI where the womans name has been for example margaret ? or ? and in my experience the first ? has been the maiden name
hope you get it sorted out

This looks like it could be her, and there is a father's name mentioned in the extracted entry (which with any luck you can look up the image for it tomorrow!)
ELIZABETH MACFARLANE
Parents:
Father: ROBERT MACFARLANE
Marriages:
Spouse: WILLIAM YOUNG
Marriage: OCT 1822 South Leith, Midlothian, Scotland

And this could be her birth, which is an extracted IGI entry:
Elizabeth Macfarlin
Christening 02 May 1802 South Leith, Midlothian, Scotland
Father: Robert Macfarlin
Mother: Margaret Frazer
There is the birth of a son James to William and Elizabeth, but it is a submitted entry, so would need to be checked:
James Young
Birth: 24 Jul 1823
Christening: 17 Aug 1823 South Leith, Midlothian, Scotland
Parents: William Young & Elizabeth Mac Farlane
Is there any sign of James in the 1841 census with his mother and step-father? Of course, he might well be on his own by that time, or perhaps didn't survive infancy.
Regards,
Sarah

Thanks to all
I have William and Family in the 1841 Census in Thompsons Land, Maryhill and then in 1851 in Bishop Street, Anderston (Although William is away at sea).
So i am looking for a James Yound in the 1841 Census but he could be anywhere but at least its free to search the 1841 !!!!
