Colinton

Post by juliewilliams511 » Wed Jan 31, 2007 7:15 pm

James Bain and Ann Spaul were married in 1838 . An extract from the Old Parish Register says married at Colinton by Rev James Kirkwood at Colinton. James was a turner and Ann's father is the late William Spaul shoemaker from London. Residence Queen Street Leith parish of South Leith.
I am now stuck, where is Colinton, would they have married at the Manse or a church, why did Ann Spaul from London go to Scotland. Who are the parents of James Bain, I just dont know where to go from here.
Can any one help I am in Shropshire, and although I am working on my husband to take me to Scotland he thinks I should know where to look before I set off on a wild goose chase.
Thanks Julie

Hi Julie,

Colinton was originally a village/farm on the western side of Edinburgh. It's now been swallowed up by the city, but the area is still called Colinton. Some of my family GILCHRISTS and NOBLES were working on farms around that area in the 1880s/1890s.

regarding whether your folk were married in the Manse or a church, I believe that unless they were posh, it's likely to have been the manse, or the bride's home, or simply somewhere convenient.

I can't shed any light on why Ann might have moved from London, but I have an ancestor who upped sticks in the 1840s from Edinburgh and went in the other direction! You're lucky, at least her moving here made her easier to track..........

Best wishes

Colinton Parish is generally listed as in Midlothian until 1930, and as part of Edinburgh since then.

All the best,

Hi Julie

Some of the big Edinburgh merchants had estates in Colinton and servants on the staff of the big house often came from quite far-flung places. One of my relatives was from the Borders but obviously was brought up to act as coachman to the household.
Another was from a tiny village in East Lothian and worked as a house servant (right down at the bottom of a long list of staff !)

Hi Julie

If you're interested, there's a map dated 1855 at www.old-maps.co.uk (just type Colinton into Place Name to search).
