How Difficult this Can Be!!

Post by Jean Jeanie » Thu Feb 01, 2007 5:02 pm

The IGI showed the birth of Alexander McDonald or Cameron to Elspet McDonald in 1849.

Found the OPR today. It actually names the father as James Cameron and gives his address and his occupation.

I really thought I was on to a winner for this as I transcribed the 1841 and 1851 censuses for the parish for Freecen and can search them entry by entry.

Can I find him at this address or nearby? The answer is NO  He must have done a runner :!:

So even when you have most of the facts and a good search facility it doesn't always work out.

Ah well, back to the drawing board

Oh Jean how frustrating.Any chance he disappeared to a neighbouring area?
I have one who is named on the Birth Certificate, lives on the next farm, marries a younger girl about three years later & they live as neighbours-she nevers marries, has four children to three different men & she & he are buried in the same cemetery. It helps that he has an unusual name & he didn't shoot the craw!

Hi Joette

Just when you get over one hurdle another one appears

I found his mother, Mary Cameron, in the 1851 census living at the address with a grandson, John Forbes aged 8. That rang a bell for some reason.

I searched in my certificates and lo and behold I found his mother's d.c. on the same page as one of my relies. Informant to the death was the grandson John Forbes.

So I get the mother's maiden name from the d.c. Cruickshank and did a search on the IGI for children born to Mary Cruickshank and somebody Cameron. There he is. James Cameron born 1812 in Cromdale.

Now for the next hurdle. Can't find him in 1841 and 1851 in Cromdale. So he must have gone to another parish before he fathered Alexander, came back and then went off again for the 1851 census.

With a name like James Cameron he'll not be easy to find.

Ah well, nobody said it would be easy

Best wishes
Jean
