Didn't mince their words, did they?

Post by emanday » Fri Feb 02, 2007 4:25 pm

I've just downloaded an OPR which is a mixture of both baptisms and marriages. The writing was so small and closely written I had to read each entry carefully to find my chap.

There were the usual selection of naturals and lawfuls, then - horrors (I've left out the surnames to protect the innocent  )...

Donald ----- and Katherine ----- had their adulterous daughter ----- baptised by a sponsor

Looks like the meenister wanted nuttin to do with it

A cat leaves pawprints on your heart
McDonald or MacDonald (some couldn't make up their mind!), Bonner, Crichton, McKillop, Campbell, Cameron, Gitrig (+other spellings), Clark, Sloan, Stewart, McCutcheon, Ireland (the surname)

Par for the course in terms of the language used in such situations by the post-Reformation presbyterian churches in Scotland.

Have a read of Scotland's national poet's pome "Holy Wullie" :!:

It gives a reason as to why my great Aunt from the strict Presbyterian family committed suicide on finding she was pregnant in the early 20th Century, the burial service being read by a family member.

I am glad some things have changed.

Today after much searching I found an OPR for one of my ancestors only to see in one of the columns marked "Relief" ... my initial instinct of poor relief was wrong and I found out that it referred to the "Relief Congregation" who were a breakaway church in Stirling.
Wanting to know more about them I found this entry in Wikipedia
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/St_Ninians ...... now thats what I call a speech
