Marriage Banns when not from the parish....

Post by And It Makes Me Shine » Tue Feb 06, 2007 4:52 pm

I have had a look at some of the images now available for OPR's and I have a query. In one of the OPR's it states :"Andrew Ballantine from this parish and Isobel Young in Blantyre."

My question is would Blantyre be mentioned because that is where she lived at the time or where she would have been baptised or is there any other reason?

I have started to look at Isobel Young born or christened in Blantyre in the mid 1700's and there is only one and from that I have found three generations back but I am still not convinced that it is definitely my Isobel in the IGI.

I stand to be corrected but as far as I am aware it means she was at the time of her marriage living in Blantyre. This is often where you get two "Marriage" entries for the same couple. In actual fact what has happened is the publishing of the Banns in both Parishes in case either parties has a wife or husband tucked away in the other Parish or there is some family relationship which would make it an illegal match.
I would suspect at that time when their was less movement of population(again I await correction!)that it was indeed her home Parish.
Where was his Parish?Do you know either occupation? if it was a neighbouring Parish then this would have given them the opportunity to meet or if either had an occupation that entailed moving around then this too would have opened up opportunities for marriage without your home Parish.

he was East Kilbride and they had farmland in later generations so probably a farmer. Blantyre does indeed neighbour East Kilbride. I have looked at Blantyre in the 1770's the population was only 440 so what were the chances of two Isobel Youngs born around the same time in such a small population.

Hi
If two brothers, whose mother was called Isobel, married around the same time and their wives had daughters around the same time there is every chance that both girls would be called Isobel.
We had a similar situation in Cumnock. All three brothers called their first born daughters by the same name. One Grandmother also had the same name.
Sometimes the only way is to line up all the children born in the village with that surname and work out the dates they were born :(
Unlike some other creatures humans normally can only manage 1 birth within a given year :D :D

I have went further back on this family and I cant see any record of an Isobel. Her father had 15 siblings and the name never appeared and the same another generation back from that 10 children no Isobel.
