Death before 1855

Post by Miss Poohs » Sat Feb 10, 2007 1:22 pm

I'm trying to help someone out, but the death they need to check would have been between 1841 - 1844, is it possible to do this?

It depends on where in the country. Some places such as Inveresk have very detailed death registers giving the name of the person and if the information was supplied then it can tell you where they died, why and who they are related to.

Other records I have seen just give a name or Joe Blogg's wife. It may also give you how much they paid for a mortcloth if they had one.

But from my experience it is a hit and miss. The person may have been registered or not.

Hi Miss Poohs,

If you go into the Mitchell Library and look through the Gorbals OPR microfilms you may be lucky. There are burials in three OPR books (burial registers) for Gorbals.

644.2/9 : 1807-29
644.2/10 : 1831-39
644.2/11 : 1840-54

All the best,

AndrewP

Just in passing, the definitive guide to what exists in the OPRs is -

"Detailed List of the Old Parochial Registers of Scotland"
Edinburgh, Murray & Gibb, 1872

(Ask the supervisors at NRH and they will direct you to the several copies that there are at NRH, which have been meticulously updated by hand over the years.)

Reprinted and updated in 1970, -

Compiled by V. Ben Bloxham
Brigham Young University
Brigham Young University Press, Prove, Utah,

I believe that the SAFHS have a project on the go to reprint this, possiby including updates since 1970.

NAS have a project on the go that will result in a listing of all churches, Established Church and others, including location and nature of registers etc.

The Los Angeles FHC have a similar project on the go, - they have the biggest LDS holding of Scottish material outside of Salt Lake City, -

Scottish Research Resource Guide #1
Non-Conformist Church Records + Registers
Part 1 : Shetland to Bute
Compiled by Sam H.W.D. Gibson
Carlsberg Press, Anaheim, California, 2006

The British Floor at the GSU Library in Salt Lake City have three loose leave volumes listing established and other Scottish church records of which they are aware.
