Hi Jean
Had a look on www.old-maps.co.uk and nothing jumping out at me so far - I think we need a local or someone who knows that area well! It could easlily be a farm or steading - just a couple of houses or so. There is a Nether Lennie Farm House and Nether Lennie Cottage near Cramond according to www.scotsorigins.com and Cramond is near Dalmeny which is the nearest I've found so far....
Best wishes

Hi Jean,
I have looked through the various ages of maps on the NLS website and can find no place that resembles Neithrie in Dalmeny parish (the main body of the parish, or the smaller detached part a short distance to the south-west). If it is elsewhere, then where do you start?
All the best,
AndrewP

Well if Andrew can't find it....it's ok for me to step in with a layman's guess.
On the whole page all the references seem to be to place and not to a house name or farmstead. And for the most part they are all right about Dalmeny...Queensferry..etc..altho there is the mention of Carlaurie that is a bit of hike.
Sooooo.....based on my extensive knowledge of Scottish geography placenames pronunciations and other random associative word skills..
...(and yes btw I do agree it's spelled Neithrie in this application)....the first thing that popped into my mind??? Niddrie !!! Then when I went to the map to see just where the heck Niddrie was (those previously lauded Geography skills) I was amazed to see it might just be within commuting distance.
The spelling of it on the Old Parish map I found was Niddery though which didn't help...
..but....there you have it.
My guess is Niddrie.
So now tell me honest....would that sound anything like Neithrie said in a proper Scottish accent??????
Best wishes
Jean

Carlowrie (modern spelling) is to be found in Dalmeny parishJustJean wrote:..altho there is the mention of Carlaurie that is a bit of hike.
I had looked at Niddrie (also spelled Niddry) - just over the parish boundary into Kirkliston, but dismissed it - maybe wrongly. It seems to be the best guess so far.JustJean wrote:Sooooo.....based on my extensive knowledge of Scottish geography placenames pronunciations and other random associative word skills.....(and yes btw I do agree it's spelled Neithrie in this application)....the first thing that popped into my mind???
