Marriage of William Strachan.....

Post by AnneM » Sun Feb 18, 2007 11:04 am

Hi

Can anyone please work out what the occupation for Jean Hewett's late father was? I have an idea but don't want to prejudice anyone in advance! Quite possibly I could be totally wrong.

Hope SKS will add a link to this image and also hope my first attempt at an upload has worked.

Hi Anne,

I see Pale Tyde waiter there. According to the following webpage, a tide waiter was a customs officer. I am not sure what to make of the "pale" part of it.

http://www.sorbie.net/old_occupations.htm

Was this someone who waited to see who would sail in on the tide and try to sneak their contraband ashore?

All the best,

AndrewP

Hi Andrew

I had thought of Tyde Watcher, which did not seem quite right, but you are right it looks like waiter. I guess he did wait for people to try to smuggle things in to Aberdeen maybe at the harbour, doubtless not the same stuff that gets smuggled into Aberdeen and all points north east now!

That makes a change from all the Ag Labs and labourers that I usually find, pity he's someone else's and not mine.

Thanks for that web site.

Hi Folks

It was the Late Tide Waiter as his occupation.

I'm envious of the whole OPR entry. Clear writing, full descriptions, names all over the place......... Why have none of mine been like that :(

Thanks for that one Russell. It makes a lot more sense than the Pale Tyde waiter that I read there.

That leaves three options that I can see. Was he...
(1) The Late William Hewitt
(2) William Hewitt, a retired Tide Waiter
(3) William Hewitt, a Tide Waiter on the night-shift?

All the best,

AndrewP

In this context, "late" most often means when alive.

The clue here is ".... daughter of the Deceased Willm Hewitt !!

Hi

Thanks all. That's definitely it, late tyde waiter. I was frustrated by this because the rest of the entry is so clear, as Russell says, and I could not make this make sense. unfortunately there does not seem to be a birth for Jean/ Jane or a marriage for William, too bad! However it's a real boost to get her father's name and occupation at all.

Some of the Aberdeen OPRs are just brilliant. I'm also gnashing my teeth. Though I live there, I have no NE ancestors of my own at all. Mine are all to be found below a line drawn diagonally, at not too sharp an angle, across Scotland, North West to South East, and passing just above Perth (not counting those who came from Ireland and Germany).

The tyde waiter belongs to a friend of a friend who is due to get a surprise 50th Birthday present from said friend, later in the year. I did make the friend ascertain that she would like a family tree though! Mind you I don't begrudge her this good line as most of hers disappear off to Ireland fairly quickly or are English and less easily accessible.

I'm HAPPY. Just had another dekko at the IGI and though no birth for my Jeanie there were 2 Williams and a Margaret born about the right time to a William Hewit and his spouse Elizabeth Broun or Brown. Checked the second William and three cheers daddy is a tidesman!!

[woohoo] [many-greens]

Anne

Ha. Even better. William was hiding as Howat on their marriage. He came from Echt and it gives her father's name. This is too much happiness!!!!!!!
