1822 Proclamation & Marriage. Interred persons.....

Post by Dennis » Wed Feb 21, 2007 9:34 pm

I just uploaded the image for a marriage of Laurence Lennox & Katharine Daes (Deas?). The image lists the Proclamation May 26th and a bit further down a note that they were married June 7th.
There are records on the same page for interred persons; I could not find the IGI for the interred person James Smith.
Too bad we can't do an 'interred' search on OPRs :)

There are 6 columns on the right of the image, apparently for numerical records of ?

I'll put the url here http://talkingscot.com/gallery/displayi ... ?pos=-1068

I think you'll find that the numbers refer to £sd (Pounds, Shillings and Pence). This would have been the payment made to the parish by the people concerned.

I've found some where the sum paid seems to be regular for an event, but also have some where it was a "donation to the poor of the parish" implying that the amount was decided by the giver. I understand that others were charged according to the parish's assessment of what they might be able to afford.

If you look at the very first line you will see it says "balance brought over", so they were keeping a running total of what had been paid.

It's the church accounts, recording all sums paid out and received.

Collection income, rent, interest on capital, fees for proclamations and burials (maybe the hire of the mortcloth); salaries, poor relief sums paid, payment for the purchase of coal, payment for work on the (church) bell.

Where there's no reference to poor relief for outgoing payments, these may be for services provided, but the person and their service is so well known that there was no need to specify the reason for the payment.

It's not uncommon to find this material in the OPR index if it's the only place that proclamations are recorded.
