Baptism in Rio?.....

Post by SarahND » Sun Feb 25, 2007 9:33 pm

Hi all,
I decided to try to create my own user album in the gallery instead of using the public one. With any luck, you should find there some interesting OPR baptism records. They are for two sisters, Clementina (born 1810) and Janet (born 1812) Ruxton, daughters of Robert Ruxton and Clementina Farquharson. The OPRs are from Logie Buchan, Aberdeenshire, but the baptisms obviously did not take place there. What do you think? Were these girls baptized aboard ship or in Rio? Logie Buchan was the home parish of the father.

Hello Sarah

As an old matelot  seriously, I think it means the children were baptised on Her Majestys ships in the port of Rio De Janiero (I feel a samba coming on  ) Rio was a popular port of call in those days I am assuming that the parents waited for a suitable ship to arrive with the appropriate sin bosun on board. I wonder if it was a bit like those mass weddings with all these wains greetin and waiting to be baptised.

I'd agree with Stew.

These appear to be a fascinatingly early equivalent of later "Consular Births" records, but, even if there was a British Consul in Rio de Janeiro at this point, there wasn't yet by these dates a formal method of reporting such births to the UK authorities via the local consul.

In other words, the parents were determined that their wains would be baptized by UK ministers, and used the chaplains of Royal Navy ships in that role, and then, presumably, sent the relevant info back to the minister/session clerk in Logie Buchan for inclusion in the Logie Buchan Old Parochial Register.

What an absolutely fascinating find !!

David
