Hi folks
I've got two birth records that I would like to be able to find. One of them is for John Henderson, born circa 1805 in Isle of Arran, whilst the other is for his wife Margaret Stewart, also born Isle of Arran, but born circa 1816.
I've looked on the ScotlandsPeople site in the section for OPR births, and can't see anything that will let me specify Isle of Arran as a birthplace, which would lead me to presume that births on the island would have been registered on the Ayrshire mainland. Can anyone shed any light as to where this might be?

Thanks Andrew
It looks as if I've been able to find the Henderson record I was looking for. I'll pick up on the Stewart record another day
Don't suppose you know where I can access images of old maps by any chance?

Andrew knows very well, but this might just be one of the rare times when he is getting some sleep. You'll find a number of useful map references here:

Hi,
Another map from the NLS website (that doesn't seem to be linked from their main index page) is:
http://www.nls.uk/maps/early/os_scotlan ... index.html
If you zoom in on Arran from that map, you will find that the east third of the island is Kilbride parish, and the west two-thirds is Kilmory parish.
All the best,
AndrewP

Thanks to everyone for the help with this - I've now managed to identify the area of Arran in which my ancestor was born. Without wishing to "plug" any other site, it's amazing what happens when you visit a certain well-kent search engine and enter the name that you want to find!
