When researching rellies on the OPR.
Ay keep in mind David’s very important post

http://talkingscot.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=7931

I have put in the gallery a page from Pigot’s 1837 directory showing the Glasgow Kirks.

http://talkingscot.com/gallery/displayi ... ?pos=-1151

Unfortunately, a lot of the records, other than those from the Established church, appear a bit erratic.
It looks to me as if the records were only entered when someone took it up ther humph tae log them in a book.
And who got the Books after the Disruption?
Do we know?
I have a bid in for the 1846 Glasgow P. O. directory (sadly no map) , I’d jist like to see the list of Kirks then.

Hi Davie,
:!: Thanks for posting that image! I have a letter from my 3rd great grandfather to his daughter, dated 4 Jan 1837, where he says, "But I have got a preacher that I prefer to the great Kirk and that is certainly saying a very great deal. He is a young man the Revd Robert Montgomery Assistant to the Revd George Amond St Mary's Chaple where I am a joined member and constant attender..." There on the page you posted is St Mary's on Renfield Street and the Rev. G Almond-- cool! :D
Thanks again,
Sarah

I appreciated your post, Davie.

Good luck with your bid on the Post Office Directory. That will be a gold mine of information! Matched with a couple of old maps, it will be a social history dream!!

A nice bonus for you Sarah!

Love it Sarah.
Anither wee bit o' Kirk history.
Robert Montgomery was the first Minister of St Jude's Episcopal Church in Glasgow, built in 1838.
He was one of the Preacher Poets.
Pity you did not have a signed letter from him.
Worth £40 the day.

I have several directories on shelf Frances.
Including the first Glasgow one.
Also a few Pigot's, Slater's, Kelly's
Just got, this month, "Slater's Directory of Scotland" 1873
A large tome tae say the least.
Only the tattered remains of the map is there, showing Kincardine and a bit of Forfar.
The page I posted from 1837 came from a cd.
There are plenty of them on sale on the net and are generally good value for £6 or so.
However, I much prefer the book form.

Hi Davie
And who got the Books after the Disruption?
In the records I've seen for various Free Church areas in Easter Ross, the Free Chuches started their own birth and marriage records, with the original OPRs staying with the established church. This may not be the case in all areas, though. I've only seen several from that particular area.

Best wishes
Lesley
