Hi Neal,

A very warm welcome to Talking Scot [scotland-flag]

I can only find this on IGI...

JAMES BURDICK Birth: 07 MAR 1744 Of, , , Scotland
Spouse: PHEBE SMITH - Marriage: About 1766 , Sussex, New Jersey

PHEBE SMITH - Birth: 18 SEP 1748 Of, , Sussex, New Jersey

The children listed for them (born in New Jersey) are...

ABIGAIL BURDICK - Birth: 31 DEC 1767 , Sussex, New Jersey
PHEBE BURDICK - Birth: 26 AUG 1769 , Sussex, New Jersey
RACHEL BURDICK - Birth: 11 JUN 1772 , Sussex, New Jersey
ENOCH BURDICK - Birth: 24 SEP 1774 , Sussex, New Jersey
SAMUEL BURDICK - Birth: 25 JUN 1776 , Sussex, New Jersey
MERCY BURDICK - Birth: 06 MAY 1779 , Sussex, New Jersey

Might they be the family you are looking for? As yet, I cannot find James Burdick on Scotlands People.

Added later: The only birth/baptism that came up on SP for 1744 +/- 3 years using wildcards was baptised 1st June 1744 BADENOUCH JAMES, Father JA(mes). BADENOUCH in Kirriemuir, ANGUS. Doesn't seem very likely to be the right one, but who knows?

Hi Neal,
Welcome to Talking Scot :D
Like Mary, I assume you have found the submitted IGI entry and are trying to prove it:

James Burdick
Birth 7 Mar 1744, Scotland
Spouse: Phebe Smith
Marr: about 1766 Sussex, New Jersey

I have gone out a bit farther on a phonetic limb than Mary  and searched for James b*r*k, leaving out the /d/ in case it came up as a /t/ or /th/, all possible variants. On Scotland's People (link at the top of this page) there are 19 James b*r*k born in Scotland between 1740 and 1750. None of them is spelled Burdick, nor even Burtick, but there are some plausible variants, I think:

29/03/1740
BARRACK JAMES
JOHN BARRACK/
Methlick /ABERDEEN

01/05/1748
BARRACK JAMES
JAMES BARRACK/MARJORY TAYLOR
New Deer/ABERDEEN

11/05/1746
BERRICK JAMES
JAMES BERRICK/MARGARET CHAPMAN
Markinch/FIFE

09/02/1744
BERWICK JAMES
JAMES BERWICK ELSPETH HORN
St Andrews and St Leonards/FIFE

28/08/1748
BERWICK JAMES
WILLIAM BERWICK MARGARET RUSSELL
St Andrews and St Leonards /FIFE

10/08/1746
BORTHICK JAMES
THOMAS BORTHICK/
Jedburgh/ROXBURGH

30/05/1745
BORTHWICK JAMES
JAMES BORTHWICK/MARGARET RICHARDSON
St Cuthbert's EDINBURGH CITY/MIDLOTHIAN

31/07/1748
BORTHWICK JAMES
GEORGE BORTHWICK/AGNES CHALMERS
Edinburgh EDINBURGH CITY/MIDLOTHIAN

24/01/1748
BORTHWICK JAMES
ALLEXANDER BORTHWICK/ISOBEL PAISLEY
Langholm or Staplegorton /DUMFRIES

30/03/1749
BORTHWICK JAMES
GEORGE BORTHWICK/JANET PORTEOS
Moffat /DUMFRIES

None exactly matches the date of birth in the submitted entry :( And even if you were to look at all the christening records, it is impossible to tell from them which one of these wee lads might have hopped on a ship for New Jersey :( I'm afraid that more research will need to be done on the American side of the Atlantic, to try to ascertain where he came from and/or the real date of his birth.

I really sympathize, since I have at least 3 Scottish lines that are stuck on the east coast of the U.S. and no way to make the jump back to Scotland :? Is there anything else at all you can tell us about this man?

All the best,
Sarah

Thanks folks

We find him in the IGI born in three different places. Vermont, Mass, and Scotland. I have checked Vermont (no listing of him). I think Vermont might be the answer.

Thanks again!!!
Cheers

Hi again,
A search for James Burdick married to Phebe Smith brings up some families trees that seem to have solid documentation behind a James Burdick, born 7 Mar 1744 in Lanesboro Massachusetts, who died 29 Nov 1807 in West Oxford, Canada. I found what I thought was a convincing one that cites some Revolutionary war documents and a successful DAR application, etc. The children named were also born in Lanesboro and the family is also taken back eventually to a Robert Burdick, born 1630 in England...
Have you checked this one and found errors?
Regards,
Sarah

This seems to differ from the info you found Sarah. No references given with this one, but worth following up as well perhaps.

Best wishes

Hi Sarah

Can I ask? What is a DAR application?
I spoke with the research librarian at Westerly RI and they have no record of James being born there. He did purchase some land there, but no birth record for him.
Rumour has it that he was taken as a Tory prisoner at the Battle of Bennington, jailed at Southampton for eight months, then escaped. We have sworn documents to this effect by various residents of Lanesboro. These are found from the Land applications to the Crown (We think they were inlaws of his).

Thanks again guys :)
Cheers

Sorry, I should know better than to toss out acronyms without explanation  ! DAR stands for Daughters of the American Revolution. "The DAR Patriot Index contains names of Revolutionary patriots, both men and women, whose service (between 1775 and 1783) has been established by the National Society, Daughters of the American Revolution." The application process has become, over the years, more rigorous, so the more successful recent applicants you can find, the better. They require proof at each step of the way back to the "Patriot". Have a look at the website: http://www.dar.org
Cheers,
Sarah
