Proclaimed Gratis.....

I used up some of my free credits to view a marriage records of John Edgar and Mary McCallum in Dryfesdale 1836..
This record always puzzled me because they started having children long before this date?

Anyway the record says "John Edgar and Mary McCallum, both in the parish of Dryfesdale proclaimed gratis"

Any suggestions?..... it's the only record on the page that says proclaimed gratis.

I can only assume that as "gratis" means "free". They were declaring that they were free to marry.

That co-incidence didn't occur to me

I was wondering if for some reason John and Mary didn't have to make a payment for their marriage?

I read it as meaning that they weren't required to pay the standard charge for proclamation, for whatever reason ................
