Info on 1796 marriage entry?.....

Post by Jang » Mon Apr 16, 2007 1:04 am

What info would I find on the marriage entry of John Erskine and Margaret Murray which took place on 11 March 1796 in Clackmannan? I'm trying to find out who John's parents were - would it have that info?

Hi Jan,

Sorry to say this, but out of all the OPR marriages I've got, only one gave a parent name, and that was only the father! However it also gave both the groom's occupation and that of both fathers plus the names of the "witnesses". It was a bit of a treasure. I then realised that it was also indexed under the bride's parish and that one was just as informative, but still no mother's names

Most only give the bride and grooms names, possibly his occupation and sometimes name the parishes each came from. It's a bit of a lottery, I'm afraid.

Hi Emanday,

Thanks for your reply. I was afraid that would be the case. I've tried finding John's death, even narrowed it down to between 1858 and 1861, but no luck. Guess that's what comes of having a mariner in the family.
And Erskine is a pretty common name around Clackmannan. :-(

Oops! I'm confusing my Johns. John Erskine died sometime between 1805 and 1812, so I can't find his parents that way.
