Hi Elgar

There is only one death at Melrose around that time with a similar name - but with different spelling of the surname.

William Mathieson, woolen weaver. died 20 Sept 1873 at Melrose
Widower of Agnes Brockie
Parents William Mathieson, Woolen Weaver, deceased and Elizabeth Anderson, deceased.

Hope this helps

Ted

Hi Ted, thanks v much for your quick response but sorry to say this ain't my man!
I understand from a researcher that I had employed some years ago that she found a William Matthewson d. 1875 in Melrose, Roxburgh on the General Index of Deaths in Scotland 1855 -1880.
I believe too that IF this is my Wm then he was a Wine & Spirit Merchant.
Thanks again

Hi Elgar
You can search the indexes yourself on the Scotlands People site at no cost. (see link above)
To see the results of the search you need to pay, but you can achieve quite a lot sometimes just querying the database to find out if anything likely is there, before having to pay up!

e.g. using the search there is a William M*th*son or Ma*thewson who died in Melrose in 1875, aged 72. If that sounds about rigth for your man, that record may be worth following up.

Best wishes
Lesley

Thanks Annette and Lesley, I have seen that there is a William Matthewson on scotlandspeople that I will follow up with the magic of a Credit card :(
Unfortnately converting Oz dollars to pounds works out quite expensive then to make matters worse the unused points expire and one has to spend more to validate them.
It is time that Scotlands People offered subscriptions:)
Thanks for your help, it is of enormous benefit to those of us who are so far away.
Cheers
Elgar

Hi Elgar,
If you haven't been on Scotland's People in a few months you may not have noticed that they have extended the expiration of credits to 90 days now, so you don't have to be in so much of a rush to find more records to look up! :D
Regards,
Sarah

Hi Sarah, that IS good news, I have been avoiding the site so have missed out on that gem.
I will go there in the morning and will try to have a good clear plan of everything I want to look up - famous last words....
Good night
