Mckean Murdoch married?.....

Post by clarecelt » Mon Apr 23, 2007 1:12 pm

This is my first posting as a newcomer living in Australia and i am excited to be researching my Scottish ancestry.
I have had some luck with SP and ancestry but am stuck :? with details re my Gt Gt GT Gt grandparents ....no record of their marriage in Scotland. They appear in the 1861 census for Bothwell, Bellshill and I have his death cert from 1883 where Janet Murdoch is stated as his wife.
Question...Were they married and how do i find out the details
How do i find out who their parents were?

Any help is appreciated and my appreciation to all for such a great site. :D

Hi Clarecelt

Nice to welcome you to the forum!

Here's the DC for Janet....which will give you her parent's names.

1901 MCKEAN JANET MURDOCH F 59 BELLSHILL /LANARK 625/03 0160

and this one too must be the one you were referring to...

1883 MCKEAN JAMES M 51 CAMBUSLANG GLASGOW CITY/LANARK

and so I see why you've asked for parents as his son Alex did not know the info!!!!! Ugh!! btw....I think Alex didn't know how old his dad was either. The RCE associated with the death gives an older age for him. (I'd say her son in law was kind in estimating his mum in laws age at death too!!)

Using the parents names a search in the IGI turns up these children to them:

1. JESSIE MCKEAN - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Birth: 01 APR 1864 Bothwell, Lanark, Scotland

2. CATHERINE MCKEAN - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Birth: 03 NOV 1866 Bothwell, Lanark, Scotland

3. JAMES MCKEAN - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Birth: 26 FEB 1857 Bothwell, Lanark, Scotland

4. JAMES MCKEAN - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Birth: 19 AUG 1861 Bothwell, Lanark, Scotland

5. MCKEAN - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Christening: 12 JAN 1846 Dunbeth Relief Church, Coatbridge, Lanark, Scotland

And I chose to view Catherine's BC

1866 MCKEAN CATHERINE F BOTHWELL /LANARK 625/01 0290

to see just when the parents were married which was given as 1845.

And then looking for them in the 1851 census gives you this household:

1851 Scotland Census
about James McKan
Name: James McKan
Age: 27
Estimated birth year: abt 1824
Relationship: Head
Spouse's name: Janet
Gender: Male
Where born: Muirkirk, Ayr
Parish Number: 625
Civil parish: Bothwell
Town: Mossend Works
County: Lanarkshire
Address: Iron Works 44
Occupation: Engine Driver
ED: 7
Page: 20 (click to see others on page)
Household schedule number: 70
Line: 4
Roll: CSSCT1851_149
Household Members: Name Age
Robert Donaldson 17
Alexr McKan 3
Cathren McKan 5
James McKan 27
Janet McKan 26
John McKan 8 Mo
Janet Millar 53 (she's listed as a visitor but she just might be Janet's mum according to the info on Janet's DC.....)

So at least you've got a good lead on Janet's parents....but not James.

Will keep thinking..... :?

Best wishes
Jean

Beat me to it Jean

The only birth on IGI in Ayr for a James McKean 1824+/- 2 years is 5 December 1824, but his parents are given as Hugh McKean and Jean Muir. Since neither Hugh nor Jean appear as any of the children's names, I'd wonder if he is the right one.

Jame s Mckean Janet Murdoch parents???

Post by clarecelt » Mon Apr 23, 2007 5:02 pm

Wow quick work Jean and Mary!
I had a feeling that Janet was the daughter of Alexander Murdoch and Janet Millar and you have given me real info suggesting this is the case.
When I searched IGI through family search I couldnt get details on any children! Your info Jean matches up with the 1861 census info I have, and like you I think that the Mckans are the Mckeans!

Tonight I turned up the 'Omlann' family 625/1 which seems to be them too!...obviously my search is made more difficult with these ?transcribing issues happening.

And Jean...I turned up a James Mckean, son of John Mckean and Cathren Noble....how can I follow up on this?
Ladies your input is so helpful. Thanks again

Hi again

well....a search on the IGI for any children born to James and Cathren comes up zilch..at least for the spelling of McKean I used. And there was no statutory marriage for them so am assuming it occured pre 1855 so that it may not exist or if it does will offer very limited info (assumption on my part!)......but the very next best way to pinpoint Cathren is to search for a DC for her using maiden name and married name and hope that she died post 1855.

there's only one....and it looks to be her....

1883 MCKEAN CATHERINE NOBLE F 72 PAISLEY /RENFREW 573/00 0187

So now you'll have a starting point to see if the informant will fit into the family and search for the DC of James knowing he was dead by 1883...and knowing where she was living when she died....first stop....find her on the 1881 census and see who she might be living with.....

Best wishes
Jean

James Mckean parents?

Post by clarecelt » Mon Apr 23, 2007 5:36 pm

Hello again from across the miles Jean!

As you suggested I checked the 1881 census...627 Cambuslang and there is a Katherine Mckean (?widower as on James Mckean DC of 1883 his father is stated to be deceased)
Katherine is stated to be born c1796..which seems right.
the other occupants are Marion Cherry and John Buchanan which as yet does not ring any bells.
I think we are on the right track.

Confused now!!

Post by clarecelt » Mon Apr 23, 2007 5:45 pm

Dear Jean Jeanie

thanks so much for your input....your facts are compelling. I am sorely confused now since 'your' Catherine Noble was undoubtedly married to a James Mckean and had the child William as described......

however I think that this Catherine is too young to be my James' mother...not much older than James.I think the other Katherine seems more logical.(c 1796 of Cambuslang)

Maybe the maiden name Noble is incorrect for
my James, wife.

any advice
regards Clare
