Thomas Glover - Madame Butterfly fame.....

Post by McConnachy » Sat Jan 06, 2007 1:15 am

I have sen from the 1851 census that my family lived next door to Thomas Glover's family.

Thomas Glover's father (also Thomas) was the Chief Officer of the Coast Guard at the Bridge of Don coast guard station near Aberdeen. My GGG grandfather (John McConnachy) was the boatman for the Coastguard and listed as their neighbour.

At the time of the 1851 census, the famous Thomas Glover was 13 and my GG grandfather (Peter McConnachy) was 9. It is amazing the different life patterns they took. Peter moved to Australia working on paddlesteamers in South Australia while Thomas Glover moved to Japan, etc and revolutionised Japanese industry to make it what it is today.

Two next door neighbours in 1851, two very different histories!

If anyone has more information on the Bridge of Don coast guard station near Aberdeen or the coast guard service at all in Aberdeen then I would be very grateful to hear more!

Any photos of Thomas Glover with neighbours in the 1850's would also be very interesting!

Thank you so much Frances.

To McConnach, In my search for my George family I happened upon the Glovers as you will find in past posts of this family.
Just one more thing, after a lot of searching and a contact at the time in Aberdeen I was able to purchase a copy of the book SCOTTISH SAMURAI, THOMAS BLAKE GLOVER 1838-1911 by ALEXANDER McKAY.

Chapter one "THE COASTGUARD'S FAMILY may be of some interest to you. I also was in touch with the ALEXANDER McKAY who told me there was a movie in the works about Thomas Glover with Sean Connerly playing Thomas. This fell through when Hollywood beat them to it with their "Last Samurai" which was unfortunate to say the least.
