Gartloch Asylum Records ?.....

Post by chasward » Sun Oct 02, 2005 1:18 pm

Hi all, any clever person out there able to tell me where I can get access to the records (staff or 'patients') of Gartloch Asylum, Glasgow.
One of my ancestors died there, whether he was patient or staff I have no idea. :?

Thanks,
Charlie.

Hi Charlie

You certainly came to the right place!! I myself got the answer to that very same question two weeks ago!! See the thread titled Grace Gordon McNeilly under the Statutory Record forum. Email contact to Alistair Tough at A.Tough@archives.gla.ac.uk will confirm whether there are extant records or not. He has responded to my request and last week posted the results that he found. Still waiting for the envelope....

Good luck!!

Best wishes
Jean

Hi Charlie
I used to look out across Bishoploch to Gartloch asylum from my primary school window, you can imagine the stories we told about murders and ghosts there.
Later at secondary school we had to run around the loch for P.E. and I was still frightened of the place. 8-[

Recently I have discovered that I had an ancestor who died there in 1912 just a few months after being admitted. Apparently she had a breakdown after her son was killed at work, the poor relief record shows that she was sent to Gartloch as "insane".
researching
McIntyre, Menzies, Cowley, Pearson, Copland, McCammond, Forbes, Edgar etc. in Scotland
Skinner in Northumberland

Thanks again for the info, JustJean. And input from JimM.
Had a great response from archives within 3 days, and the offer of further info, if required. You may be interested in a site i found recently,
*hidden Glasgow*. which has loads of pics taken at Gartloch as it awaits the demolishers. The main hall must have been very impressive in it's day. Regards,
Charlie.

Hi Charlie

That's good to hear. I too have now received the promised photocopies that show admission and death recordings from the ledger books kept by Gartloch. It's always interesting to see the actual record :) !

The photos are impressive as well....the place was huge!!

Thanks....

Best wishes
Jean
