streets in blantyre.....
Hello All
I was wondering if someone could please tell me where Bairds Row, Blantyre was and if it is still there. My Grandad lived there and my Dad was born there. I have a old mining map of Blantyre but sadly no names on the streets.

Blantyre
Hi Margaret
I can't find any reference to Baird's Row on either Old Maps or on Multimap. Googling brought up the following URL which contains a reference to Bairds Row in the enumerator listing for Blantyre: http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/LA ... 0931333684
If you then use Old Maps: http://www.old-maps.co.uk and enter Blantyre, view the enlarged map you can see Stonefield and Woodburn. So although not very accurate way it might just give a very rough idea of which area of Blantyre Baird's Row was in.
One other link that came up was: http://www.localgossip.org/body/about/h ... ousing.htm which mentions Baird's Row
m
Hope this helps just a little, until someone with experience of the area can help more

Hello sue
many thanks for your reply, you certianly had more luck on google than I. It is good to be able to see on the map the approx place that Bairds row would be and learn why it was called that.
Once again many thanks

Hi Margaret,
I found these items on the web that lead to a map showing where Baird('s) Row(s) was (were).
http://www.geo.ed.ac.uk/scotgaz/towns/t ... ry926.html
Comparing to the modern map at www.streetmap.co.uk shows Baird's Rows to have been about where the main road junction is near the centre of this map.
All the best,
Andrew Paterson

- Stonefield, a thriving seat of industry and population in Blantyre parish, Lanarkshire, 2½ miles NW of Hamilton and 8 ¼ SE of Glasgow, under which it has a post office. Its Established chapel of ease was founded in 1878, and contains 900 sittings. Pop. (1871) 395, (1881) 4511, of whom 2164 were in Stonefield proper, 331 in Baird's Rows, 1321 in Dixon's Rows, and 695 in Springwell.—Ord. Sur., sh. 23, 1865.
- William Baird & Co provided their housing at the "Craighead Rows" which were commonly known as "Baird's Rows", these were adjacent to their Craighead Pit and were built around the same time as their pit opened in 1876.

Hello Andrew
Thank you for the great web pages, I certianly can now tell where Bairds Rows would have been, and as a bonus I can now place the area where my Great Grandad was killed on the Caledonian Railway. He met his fate near the Craighead Signal Box, Blantyre. Once again many thanks for your help, this Talking Scots is a place of learing from many wonderful people.

Hello Davie
My Great Grandad John Morton and second wife Agnes lived at 31 Bairds Rows, Blantyre at the time of his death in 1889, he was run over by a train on the Caledonian Railway near Craighead signal box. I have only started using Scotlands pages so havent got to the census yet, they are my next search. Looks like our families would have most certianly crossed paths those many years ago.

Hi Margaret
I had a wee crash on the computer a week or so ago and managed to save the hard drive.
I have been transferring all the records onto Dvds ever since.
I came across this birth on my Gorbals Folder.
John Morton, 1874
Father John
Mother Mary McDonald.
I have the birth download from SP
If you think it is your John

Hi Margaret
I was born and breed in Blantyre, can remember the Baird rows very well.as a boy i often visited with my two school mates who lived in the rows,Joe Meechan, and Jimmy McGill.
The Baird Rows was a name given by the Blantyre folk to a bunch of single end homes in rows,i can remember about 40 homes in the three rows. The original name given by the builders William Baird Co was
Craighead Rows, called after the mine(pit)that the tenents all worked at.
It was situated at the east end of Blantyre next door to the local Greyhound racing track which in turn was next to the railway line called the Craighead Junction where your Grandfather probally met his demise.
South of the rows was the Blantyre Celtic football ground.
The whole area is now a part of a motorway from East Kilbride to Bothwell.A725(M74)
Hope this little bit helps. Researching.
