Frank Gove in New South Wales

Post by tass » Wed Oct 20, 2010 2:25 pm

The above Frank Gove, born in Glenbervie in Scotland, married Elsie McDonald in 1913 in Paddington, New South Wales. I'd appreciate some advice regarding the information available on a marriage certificate of that date. I'm interested in Elsie's parents and in confirming that this Frank is the one I'm seeking. I think Elsie may also have come from Scottish parentage. I'd welcome contact with anyone who may be able to help with accessing the details of this particular MC. Thank you, Tass

Hello Tass,

Information on a NSW marriage certificate is similar to that on a Scottish one. It's relatively expensive but can be ordered online. There may be information from other sources that will do the job. http://www.bdm.nsw.gov.au/familyHistory ... ecords.htm

Search for NSW deaths 1800-1979 for surname Gove.
http://www.bdm.nsw.gov.au/cgi-bin/Index ... D=24173434

There's Frank's death 1955, but can't see Elsie.
3884/1955, GOVE FRANK, WILLIAM, AGNES, REDFERN

Ryerson Newspaper Index http://ryersonindex.net/search.php
GOVE Elsie, Death notice, 03APR1973, Death, 78, at Heidelberg Repatriation Hospital, Sydney Morning Herald, 04APR1973.

If you search the post 1955 Sydney Morning Herald archives for “Frank Gove” including the quotes you'll see most of the notice for Elsie.
http://archives.smh.com.au/Default/Skin ... 7628395365

That's Heidelberg, Victoria and their index confirms the death. You could input any expected parents names to see if they match. Otherwise just pay the A$0.99 (62p) search fee and the parent's names should be in the index. https://online.justice.vic.gov.au/CA257 ... ndexes~&3=~

Search for Frank Gove here and you'll see his 15 page WW1 Service Record.
http://recordsearch.naa.gov.au/SearchNR ... earch.aspx

He was born in the Parish of Glenbervie at Stonehaven in Kincardineshire. Age 33yrs 4 months at enlistment in March 1915. Died 9 January 1955. Lots more interesting stuff there.

There's at least one reference to him in the pre 1955 Australian newspaper archives

Probably more scattered about online.

Hi Tass

As mentioned by Alan - there are cheaper (& usually quicker) ways to get NSW cert info - using transcription agents (not certified but all the information is given). Alternatively I was going to suggest that Victorian certificates can be downloaded online - however the 1973 index for the death of Elsie gives her parents as UNKNOWN so buying the marriage would be a much better option to find the names of her parents.

Details on transcript agents http://www.bdm.nsw.gov.au/familyHistory ... ptionAgent

Hi Tass

Nice to hear the update - although expensive, most Oz certificates make up for the lack of census data in Australia
