calling all Lapraik researchers

Post by mitchell11 » Mon Oct 25, 2010 10:07 pm

I wonder if anyone could help with a dead end I have reached. I cannot find the birth of Fidelis Hulman Lapraik in Edinburgh in 1804-5. His father was James Lapraik and his mother was Margaret Davis, according to his death certificate in 1878. His father was a soldier. Fidelis has so many spellings as does Lapraik. His name is very unusual for this family and I found the marriage of a Fildelis Hulman to Janet Hart or Crawford FRMR4-51 GROS data 685/01 053* on 21/02/1804 in Edinburgh. Could he have been their child and 'adopted' by James Lapraik? How would I find out? This makes all the difference to the blood line as I am trying to prove that Fidelis's father James Lapraik is the son of the Scottish poet John Lapraik who was the subject for Robert Burns's 'A man's a man for a' that'. Hopefully someone else out there may be looking too.
Thanks, Mitchell11

Hi Mitchell11
I have emailed you some information on the Lapraik line along with photos of the family bible and a BMD spreadsheet. It should open up as an Excel sheet.

This doesn't answer your question but Janet Holman, spouse of Fordelus died at Glasgow around 1821. She left a will which is indexed at SP where I found the info. Fordelus was a surgeon and as he was stated as the spouse of Janet I would think he was still alive then.
So.... in my opinion you Fidelus was named after the surgeon.

Have you looked at the OPR marriage entry of James and Margaret at Ayr in 1803 just in case it gives his father's name?

Searching at Google states that the poet John Lapraik lived at Muirkirk and there is this James there in 1841 -

Piece: SCT1841/607 Place: Muirkirk -Ayrshire Enumeration District: 1
Civil Parish: Muirkirk Ecclesiastical Parish, Village or Island: Muirkirk
Folio: 1 Page: 18
Address: Kirk Green

Surname First name(s) Sex Age Occupation Where Born Remarks
LAPRAICK James M 73 Independent Ayrshire
Page: 1/19 LAPRAICK Grizel F 69 Ayrshire
ANDERSON Janet F 15 Ayrshire

There is also this James at Barr (near Girvan where Fidelus lived) -

Piece: SCT1841/580 Place: Barr -Ayrshire Enumeration District: 1
Civil Parish: Barr Ecclesiastical Parish, Village or Island: Barr
Folio: 1 Page: 4
Address: Barr Village

Surname First name(s) Sex Age Occupation Where Born Remarks
LEPRAIK James M 60 Agricultural Labourer Ayrshire
LEPRAIK Margaret F 55 Ayrshire
LEPRAIK John M 20 England

I suppose both could be grandsons of the poet but how to prove it could be difficult.

I see Russell has sent you info on the family but thought I'd post this anyway.

Regards,
Annette

Thanks Annette,
I will certainly follow up your suggestions. There is lots of info to digest. That will keep me busy for a while. I like your connection to the surgeon..it makes sense.

I am new to this site and I am interested in the Lapraik/Lepraik/Lapraeck/Le Praik/Le Prague line.
I have a marriage for Fidelis Le Prague to a Jane Graham in 1835 in Girvan.
My direct line is from an Augusta born 1810 in Kent.
I have a theory. Contact me if you want me to join the hunt.

Peg

Hi Joette
I am having trouble navigating this site. I posted a private message to you a few days ago but maybe I did it wrong. If you are still interested in the Torrance line please contact again.
Thanks
