Where can I find Names.....

Post by joette » Wed Nov 23, 2005 5:29 pm

Forgive my ignorance but I have never heard the name Coutts before except for the Bank but I have an ancestor born 1854(bothersticks couldnt she have hung on?) Joseph Coutts son of Findlater Coutts & Mary Fraser. They never married he in fact married someone called Smith!
She was quite some gal & has several children to different Fathers & as far as I can tell never married. Her sister Charlotte on the other married sevral times & one husband was Jonathan Singer again a name I only associate with the sewing machines-must be the Bankie connection & the fact that most of the family worked there at some point.
How common are these/were these names in Scotland? Where can I check please?

ALSO BROWN,MCKIMMIE,MCDOWALL,FRASER.

Hi Joette,

If you log on to Scotlands People you can do a free surname search on the home page.
I think you may be surprised at the number of Coutts, far more of them than Singers.

Regards,

Alison

No definetly Singer & there were at least two Singer deaths in the period 1855-1876 but not his fathers who is looking elusive but may have died before 1855-probably Dec27th 1854.

Hi Joette
I stumbled across your posting of November, 2005 by accident.
I am Findlater Coutts, father's name Findlater Coutts, Grandfather's name Joseph Coutts, Great Grandfather's name Findlater Coutts.
Looks like we may have some common ancestry somewhere in the dim and distant past.

Hi FGCI welcome to Talking Scot.It does indeed look we have a distant connection. When my mind is clearer & I'm not so tired will have a look & get back to
you.
As far as I remember Mary & Findlater lived on adjacent Crofts for several years even after his marriage but I have a dim memory of maybe they (Mary & son) moving further North.
I have a bit on some of the Fraser siblings.

Coutts are Banff/Moray/Aberdeen.Yes with Findlater Coutts you can't really go wrong can you?
He was the Father of my GGGreat-Granny's sister's illegitimate son. They lived side by side on adjacent crofts for many years even after he married not to Mary Fraser.

Your Coutts origin would be correct
My ancestors were from North Aberdeenshire (Banff, New Byth, New Aberdour area.)
Joseph Coutts was a Blacksmith in New Byth. Others were part of the farming community.
I have another contact "Karen" who has done a great deal of research using the search vehicle "Genes Reunited"
She appears to be descended from an illegitimate? son of Joseph Ccoutts called James whom, until she got in touch, I had never heard of.
