Hello Biz,

I had a look in the newspapers but nothing jumped out at me. Even in that relatively short period of time there were many newspaper reports of lost ships etc without a listing of crew.

If he was lost from a British ship, and if he was known to be Scottish, the information, and it would be only very basic, was supposed to filter its way back to GROS and end up in the Minor Records.

However that didn’t always happen and sometimes it ended up in the English records. I think they have those at FindMyPast.

Did other records suggest he was deceased, did his widow remarry etc.

All the best,
Alan

Hi biz

My g-g-grandfather's vessel was lost with all hands in the North Atlantic, in 1861. The event didn't make the newspapers, and there is no record of his death on ScotlandsPeople, despite it being a Leith-registered vessel, with a Scottish crew. His Mate's Certificate is annotated to the effect that the vessel was lost.

Hello ,many thanks for your replies
have had a look on find my past but have had no joy
so it leaves me wondering if Bridgets mum fibbed
after all how can a child be born after that length of time so am left wondering if Hugh had died and Bridget was in fact illegitamate
so that leaves me having to find Hugh King`s death date
