Hello Helen,

I’m sorry it turned out that way. I could see it coming but I was hoping for a previously unknown half sister or maybe an even deeper mystery of switched identities or something like that.

It’s something that can happen to anyone but especially where the available certificates aren’t particularly informative. It’s pretty dreadful though when it happens at the base or whatever end of the tree and affects everything else on it.

One good thing is that the name combination is relatively unusual. By the 1911 census surname spelling should have stabilised, and middle names seem to have been included more often.

Just looking at the search on the 1911 site there are only a few with a birth date within two or three years of your estimate.

Arthur George Brookes, 1900, residing West Bromwich, Staffs.
George Arther Brookes, 1899, residing Rochford, Essex.
George A Brookes, 1899, residing Nottingham, Notts.

Best of luck and don’t give up the ship.

Alan
