I am looking for a passenger listing for Ebenezer Annan born in Kinross 1821 - died in 1847 - he was in the 1841 Scotland Census - so we
have a narrow time frame. I understand he is in A dictionary of Scottish emigrants to Canada before Confederation / by Donald Whyte.
Volume 1, 1986. 443p. but this book is not available in Australian libraries. At least we know a passenger listing for him exists, any ideas
on where else to find the information would be appreciated.

If not, I will check our public library, which has a copy.

Hi WendyT:
I have the book in hand and p. 443 is the bibliography.
The dictionary entry for Ebenezer is #192 on page 7 of 'A dictionary of Scottish Emigrants to Canada before Confederation' by Donald Whyte. 1986
192 Annan, Ebenezer, ca 1820 - 24 Jun 1847. From KRS. s/o Dr A. To Liverpool, Queens Co, NS. The Scotsman, 17 Jul 1847
From the abbreviations and explanations index
The Scotsman is available online and there are several hits when you enter ebenezer and annan and select Boolean search. The ones that appear do not show the date included in the book's citation.
You may wish to subscribe or do a free trial subscription and have a look at those records, and possibly check the 17 Jul 1847 issue.
Sorry the book was not more relevant, but it does give his destination. I’d suggest checking

http://www.thatsmyfamily.info/Metamoteu ... ns_en.html
http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/gene ... dex-e.html
All the best and don’t hesitate to come back should you find anything more on him in the above locations.

Hello Wendy,
Caledonian Mercury (Edinburgh), Monday, July 19, 1847.
DIED.
At Liverpool, Nova Scotia, on the 24th June last, in his 27th year, EBENEZER ANNAN, surgeon, son of Mr Robert Annan, surgeon, Kinross.
The text in the Scotsman is too fuzzy to detect, but a search for ‘deaths’ on the 17th finds the item.
The Scotsman, Edinburgh, 17 July, 1847.
DEATHS.
At Liverpool, Nova Scotia, on the 24th June, in his 27th year, Mr Ebenezer Annan, surgeon, son of Dr Annan, Kinross. Friends and acquaintances will please accept of this notification.
Also in the Scotsman, in 1826 there’s a mention of Cecilia Annan, Kinross, winning a prize in an education course, in 1835 there’s something similar for Ebenezer Annan, Kinross, and in 1921 there’s a short death notice for what looks like Helen Bald Whitehead, granddaughter of late Dr Annan, Kinross.
The father, Robert Annan, died 1864, at Kinross, and there’s an obit in the Dundee Courier.
Let me know if you need any of the other stuff and I’ll supply the details.
All the best,
Alan

Good work, Alan.
I would have taken from the text in the Whyte book, that his Father was Dr. A. Annan as there was no indication that Dr. A stood for Dr. Annan. I was thinking it might be Dr. Alexander Annan, or some other first name beginning with A.

Hello Frances,
Unless there was something wrong with their copy of the newspaper, it looks like the transcribers double-keyed the A and didn’t notice. Probably a bit like double-click syndrome.
Here’s something interesting, if the marriage and child’s birth could be found that would narrow things down. Maybe the marriage was the cause of the problem between father and son. The answer to all our questions is probably in the letters. The header on the snippet is 15A:359. Birchall, Stella. PHYSICIAN AND SURGEON, AGED TWENTY TWO. Nova Scotia Hist. Q. [Canada] 1975 5(3): 242-246. https://www.google.com.au/search?tbo=p& ... %22&num=10
“Reviews extracts from the letters of Ebenezer Annan (1820-47), a young physician from Edinburgh who had come to Halifax as a result of a dispute with his father. The letters are to his wife, Susan, who was still in Edinburgh awaiting the birth of their first child. Describes life in Halifax at that time”
Looks like that’s from a five(?) page article about him in the Nova Scotia Historical Quarterly. NSHQ, Vol. #5:3 (1975):
"Physician & Surgeon, Aged Twenty Two"; by Stella Birchall; Halifax, 1842; 5 pp.
http://www.blupete.com/Library/History/NSHQ.htm
Also listed in this pdf document. http://www.google.com.au/url?sa=t&rct=j ... aW6_4U-Q7Q
“Birchall, Stella. "Physician & surgeon aged twenty-two: letter extracts from Ebenezer
Annan written in 1842." Nova Scotia Historical Quarterly 5 (Sept., 1975), pp. 242-246.”
Any idea where there could be a copy?
All the best,
Alan

Re: Ebenezer Annan from Kinross to Canada 1841-1848
Hi Alan and Wendy:
The links all reference the same issue of NSHQ Nova Scotia Historical Quarterly Sept. 1975, with slight variations in the citations.
There are several libraries and archives in Nova Scotia with copies, but they are non-circulating.
There is one mention of Ebenezer in the NS Archives:
Probate and Deed records up to 1870.
The trick will be to gain long-distance access, but will send the information to Wendy and see how we can proceed.
I can try to get a photo/electronic copy of the pages, but not sure what charges may be. The microfilms won't be available for loan, but information of the LDS holdings are included.
