Sargents of Nova Scotia

Post by dicksonhawaii » Mon Aug 05, 2013 1:33 am

Hi All, I'm looking for information on the SARGENT ancestry. The Sargents lived for some time in Nova Scotia I believe in the Middle Musquodoboit area. I have traced the Sargents, relatives of my wife, From Nathen b 1873, to Wallace b 1847, to James born 1826. James was married to Sarah Ellen Taylor b 1829. James may have come over from Scotland/England and, I believe his father was a Thomas. Any information would be appreciated, as I'm at a dead end right now. Thanks, Richard

Hello Richard,
Have you found James in any census records? If so, what birth place did he give?
All the best,
Sarah

Hi Richard:

Census returns for Sargent including those in Middle Musquodobit can be viewed at these links:
1901 Canadian Census http://automatedgenealogy.com/census/Su ... nt&inames=

1911 Canadian Census http://automatedgenealogy.com/census11/ ... a&geosort= You may sort the list by first names and also by location.

The pages will also allow you to see the complete original census form through http://www.collectionscanada.gc.ca/data ... dex-e.html

Hope this is of some help,
Frances

Another excellent site:

Quite a number of "Sergents" and "Sargents" appear under Halifax County.

Hi All, Wow, I've got some research to do! Thanks to you all for the information. I have James Sargent with 5 source citations being born in Musquodoboit, Nova Scotia, but so far no luck in getting it verified and, again, he may have been born in England. I have him marrying Sarah Ellen Taylor from the "Taylor Settlement" in 1850, this in Nova Scotia. I will go to work on all the info you folks have sent, again thank you so much!-Richard

Hi All, Again, I'm needing some help as the data resources do not cover what I'm looking for. I need to find out some information on Thomas Sargent who apparently died in 1860. He married Nancy Ann Taylor and she died in 1877 from what I have found. Any one with ancestors of Thomas or Nancy Ann or are there resources that go into the 1700's I could use? I believe he lived in Nova Scotia as his son James was married there possibly in Middle Musquodoboit, Nova Scotia. Any help would sure be appreciated-Richard

Hello Richard,

There are some inscriptions here from Holy Trinity Anglican Church cemetery, with an 1855 death date for Nancy.
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.anc ... rinity.htm

SARGENT, Thomas d Mar 8, 1860 75 yrs (Surname with a 'G')
SARJENT, Nancy d Aug 23, 1855 71 yrs (Surname with a 'J') - wife of Thomas
SARJENT, Elizabeth d Apr 15, 1856 28 yrs
? Charles ? (damaged)
? ? ? 31 yrs (damaged)
SERG, Ann ? (damaged)
SERJENT, Benjamin d Jan 21, 1852 33 yrs
SERGENT, Benjamin d Sep 19, 1861 7 yrs - son of James & Sarah

If that’s them, and they were of Anglican religion, the odds are they were English.

All the best,
Alan

Many thanks Alan! I will look into what you have found and see If it matches up. The dates for Thomas and Nancy look promising, but they should have a James as a son. Perhaps he is one of the blank or hard to read entries. But thanks again for the tip!-Richard
