Military Medal

Post by Orlaith17 » Mon Oct 21, 2013 1:11 am

Hello all. I have been researching my family tree for some time and have found links in USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. A kind person sent me a photo of the gravestone of a deceased relative. From that photo, I discovered that he was a Gallipoli Veteran, and had also been awarded the Military Medal. I have his regiment details and his medal card information from Ancestry. Is there anywhere I can find out why he was awarded the Military Medal? I did find his name listed in the London Gazette as having been awarded the MM, but would love to know if there are any records detailing why it was awarded. Hope someone can help, thanks :P

Hi,

According to the National Archives http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/reco ... lantry.htm

'Usually, announcements in the London Gazette are the only surviving record for the First World War. Citations are very occasionally given in full.'

So you will probably be out of luck finding anything further.

Cheers
John

Hello Orlaith,

Is this for the same fellow you asked about previously? If so, I can’t really think of anything to add to my reply. viewtopic.php?f=32&t=17021&p=136757&hilit=

You could try a more specialized forum such as the Great War Forum. Maybe they would have some ideas. http://1914-1918.invisionzone.com/forums/

All the best,
Alan
