Hi. Were people born in Newfoundland prior to 1949 considered to be British subjects; were their BMDs kept in England?

Some of your question is answered here
https://familysearch.org/learn/wiki/en/ ... Records%29
Many births of British subjects outside of England/Wales post 1837 can be found in the registers of overseas/military births. I believe it was up to the parents/family to register such births. These are available at findmypast - I don't know if there are other sources of same. You can search fmp at no charge but have to pay to see the detail of the results.

Re: Newfoundland pre-1949
Hi Dennis:
BMDs are the responsibility of the provincial governments of Canada.
According to the Provincial website there are gaps in the records https://www.novascotiagenealogy.com/Births.aspx
Other helpful sites include:
http://www.bac-lac.gc.ca/eng/discover/g ... ction.aspx
Family History Society of Newfoundland and Labrador
http://www.fhsnl.ca/
Newfoundland and Labrador Genealogical Society
http://www.explorenewfoundlandandlabrad ... wfoundland&...
Some of the available records are included in Ancestry and are searchable through paid subscription service. There may be other options included in the previous sites.
If you wish to provide the information you have on the person(s) you are searching perhaps we can suggest further options or may be able to assist in locating further information.
