Lesley,

I would love to take you up on your offer of a search of the poor law records index to see if James Robertsons widow Isabella made any such request for help, given that she seems to have been left with two or three children to support after the accident.

How were these requests made anyway? Would someone make a request on behalf of the individual or would it fall to the affected person to make the representations?

Does the index just have the name of the person requesting help or are there other details on there as well?
