Abbotsford Place Gorbals Glasgow

Post by momat » Mon Jan 16, 2006 9:17 am

This is an odd one.
Can anyone tell me if this address was a Church or a Registrar office in 1894
On an 1894 Marriage it states place of marriage
34 ABBOTSFORD PLACE GORBALS
I was born and bred at this very same address 1941-1952 when it was a Tenement Building . :? :?

It's unlikely to have been a registrar's office, as marriages weren't carried out by registrars until much later.

It was quite common for the ceremony to take place at the home of the bride, or at some venue suitable for holding the reception.

Hello David,

The other Marriage entry on the same sheet is at the same address.
I can remember a Church on the other side of the street but a lower number as I am sure that was where I went for country dancing as a child.
I am really puzzled :?

What was the addresses given for the couple[s] being married there ?
And who married them?

As David said marriages usually took place in the bride's home or other relations or the home of the minister or whoever was officiating.

What was on the ground floor of the address, can you remember? was it maybe a restaurant or used as a Mission Hall.

My friends parents marriage address in the 1960's would have been 33 Plantation Street - a tenement building, but the ground floor was the Gospel Hall, converted from a former billiard hall.
The qualification of the person marrying them may shed some light on the subject.

I've had a look at the 1895 OS map for the area, nothing marked to indicate there was anything other than houses, except from the school and a Public house at the South end.

Hullo Maureen

Nothing to shed light on your question. Except that my grandaunt got married at 22 Abbotsford Place, her parents home in 1908.

Just wanted to say that our ancestors must have been neighbours! Mine were at 46 Abbotsford place in 1891 and had moved to 22 Abbotsford place by 1901. These were both their home and business (carriage hirer and funeral undertaker) addresses. Virtual Mitchel has phoros of the 2 tenements. None of No 34 unfortuanately.

Hi Maureen

If my memory serves me some of the tenements in Abbotsford place were relics of the Town houses of the earlier Glasgow merchants.
They were big flats which had been subdivided into smaller flats for rent.
One (can't remember the number though) was used as the Gorbals Nursery until about 1965 and had not been divided up. My aunt ran the Nursery for a few years with assistance from Rev Geoff Shaw and others. There were smaller flats upstairs as well.
Does this ring any bells?

Hi
I also have a marriage, where the groom was living at 21 or 81 Abbotsford Place in 1894.
The couple were married in an hotel in Bath Strret and the minister had travelled down from Perthshire to perform the ceremony.
Russell is quite correct
These Town Houses were once owned by the middle class.
On the 1881 Census, Number 34 was occupied by 6 families.
A Potato Merchant, a wine merchant, a teacher at Glasgow Uni. etc.
Most of them were pulled down in the 1960s.
Interestingly on the 1881 census living at NO 33

Hello all and thanks for all the ideas etc;

The Groom George McNaught lived at 45 South Gorbals Street
The Bride Isabella Davies lived at 41 South Gorbals Street

The Marriage was 13th July 1894 at 34 Abbotsford Place according to the Church of Scotland Officiating Minister Andrew Leiper of Gorbals Parish.

I know that in the 1920-50s next to 34 was a Jewish Hotel and Restaurant
called Geneens and I am wondering if it had been a hotel prior to that .
I have a picture of it from a book about the Gorbals.

Hi Maureen,
34 Abbotsford Place is where Andrew LEIPER, Minister of Gorbals Parish was living in the 1891 census.
So it would seem that the marriage took place in his house.
Here he is in the previous census - at No 5.

Hello Jack ,

Once again you have come to my rescue.

It is so strange that it is the same Tenement as where I lived all these years later and I am not one of that family .
I can only imagine how they had anything like a Wedding in the flats up that Close as although they were reasonable size in the 40s

Also the name you posted there

Jane Allardice or MATHIE .
That is the Paternal side of my search you helped me with last year,
McNaught m Mathie.
Will have to check if it is the same one.

Once again THANK YOU Jack.
Maureen
