Hi David,
Seems there are 2 John BEGLYs of a similar age in Glasgow 1851.
You're right on this Princes Street being in St Mary's - it's between King St. & Saltmarket St.
--
The BEGLY family in St. Mary's.
[1851 644-1 (543) Ed 5, p 7, lines 3-8]
John 50, Susan 46, James 17, Mary 15, Francis 12, Joseph 10.
&
The BEGLY family in St. George.
[1851 644-1 (540) Ed 51, p 1, lines 1-6]
John 45, Isabella 38, James 16, Alexander 15, John 12, Archibald 8.
--
Karen, you gave "...the Gros Data # is 644/01 172/01 007 Begly John..."
It would appear this is the one for St Mary's Parish....
You probably have another Gros Data # for a John BEGLY in St George's Parish,
but on your original query you gave the St Mary's number which as David says is 61 Princes St.

Glad it's now sorted out!
Jack
ps, the St. Mary's & St. George nos. i've given are from the G&WSFHS 1851 CD index.
SP (through necessity) have made up a different numbering system for their online 1851 census.

Isabella McArthur Bagley

Post by nelmit » Sat Apr 01, 2006 6:58 pm

Hello all,

I don't know why I looked at the poorhouse applications (did someone ask?) but I'm glad I did.

Application from Isabella McArthur Bagley, 15 Mc Alpine Street.
Date- 27.1.59
Country and place of birth - Kilmonivaig.
Widow, age 45. Housewife
Reason - Ill health
Dependants - None

29.10.66
Her parents, Alexander McArthur, crofter and Isabella Mcdonald both deceased. Uncle Angus McArthur, crofter, Kilmonivaig.
She states that the inspector of Kilmonivaig met her (on the canal bank, gave her one shilling & some refreshment asking her to remain and he would pay her aliment) when she was home with the body of Clement Mcdonald to ?Brackletts? 6 years ago.

Names of children not dependent:
James 20 - A soldier}
TWINS
Alexander 20 - A soldier}
John 18 - A soldier
Archd. 15 - Going messages about the quay, earns 4/-.

See Dr. Fergus May 1867 Kilmonivaig.

No. of previous applications if any - 44876
Settlement - Glasgow.
She says she has been delicate a long time and is wholly unfit for any work last 6 weeks and is now confined to bed last 2 weeks and applies very ill. Used to be supported by her family till the three oldest sons lost their employment about 1 year ago when they were forced to enlist to avoid starvation and she has since she says been selling her things and knitting a little but thinks her health is destroyed from want.

This was one that brought a real lump to my throat.
There was a reference to the fact that they should have applied to Ireland for settlement which I didn't understand but It must have been something to do with her husband being born there.
Pity there was nothing about him but at least you know a bit more about Isabella.
I also did a quick search on FREECEN and I think you will find a few ancestors there listed on the 1841 census.

The reference is D - HEW 10/3/17 page 184 if you want to order a copy.

Kind regards,
Annette M

Hi folks

You'll find the family on the 1851 census in Glasgow on SP. Father was indeed born in Ireland. The census is difficult to read but it does give a place in Ireland...but I don't know what it says

Best wishes
Jean

Re John Begley died 1855

Post by Jack » Sat Apr 15, 2006 1:49 am

Hi Karen,
It's only curiosity with this, and i don't think there can be an answer!
You mentioned over on your other post,
--
"...John Biggly died June 7 1855. wife Isabella Mcarthur. s/o James Biggly and Mary Mcginnis.
children were John, James, Alexander, Archibald and apparently another child Neil..."

--
On Isabella McARTHUR's 1869 Poor Relief application she said hubby John had been killed at the Liverpool Boats (abt 1857).
So why didn't she just say he'd died in Glasgow 1855 - very puzzling! :?
Jack
ps, what was the address on John's 1855 DC? and was the informant Isabella herself?
