Thanks for clarifying that, Russell.

Maybe my initial warning
Please bear in mind that these seem to be all submitted entries on IGI, but they might give you a few clues...

could have been a bit stronger.

What I know about Moses Brownlee (Brownlie)

Post by constancelee121 » Mon Feb 26, 2007 8:55 pm

6/6/1841 census:
Parish of Old Monkland, I can't quite read the street name - Calderbank perhaps, it appears that Moses (twenty years old) was boarding with someone unrelated to him - he is listed under a family whose head of household name is something like Andrew Fairprance and just above James Shaws. Moses is listed as a laborer.

3/7/1841 (O.P.R. marriages - Old Monkland or Coatbridge):
Moses Brownlee in this Parish and Agnes Methven in the Parish of Charleston have given in their names in order to proclamations of banns 3 days.

3/7/1841 (O.P.R. marriages - Dumfermline):
Moses Brownlee, Laborer Parish of Monkland and Agnes Methven residing on this parish gave in their names for proclamation in order to marriage, being three times proclaimed and no objections made their certificate to that effect was granted.

30/3/1851 census:
Street listed as something like Old Banu Row
In the household are:
*Moses Brownlee, head, Married, 36, blast furnace keeper, (born) Lanark Rethington (this last is unclear)
*Agnes, wife, married, 34 (this could be 37), (born) Fife Charleston,
*Margaret, daughter, unmarried, 7, scholar, Lanark Old Monkland,
*David, son, unmarried, 6, scholar, Lanark Old Monkland,
*William, son, 4, scholar,
*Grace, daughter, 1

7/4/1861 census:
Street looks like 10 Buttings Land - they may be living in a duplex of some sort because there is a different family also listed at the same address.
In the Brownlie household are:
*Moses, head, married, 49, blast furnace man, (born) Lanarkshire Cambuslary
*Agnes, wife, 47, Fifeshire Charleston
*Margaret, daughter, 17, Lanarkshire Calderbank
*William, son, 14, scholar,
*Agnes, daughter, 2,

1869 death in the eastern district of Old Monkland in the county of Lanark
Agnes Brownlie, married to Moses Brownlie blast furnace man, died Feb. 4th 1861 Battery Land Calderbank, female, 56 years old, father - William Methven, ship loading contractor, deceased, mother - Margaret Methven, maiden name Balfour, deceased. Cause of death - Typhus Fever, 14 days, pneumonia, 14 days, signed by David Brownlie, Son. Registered 1869 Feb. 5th, at (unclear).

2/4/1871 census:
Jamieson's Land, Parish Road, Moses and family are listed as boarding with the Alexander Clydesdale family. In Moses’ family there are:
*Moses Brownlie, boarder, 56, laborer in Iron works, (born) Lanarkshire (and what looks like) Cambusnethlen
*David, boarder, 26, bricklayer - master - employs 3 men,
*William M., 24, commercial clerk profession trade,

1885 death, Eastern District of Old Monkland, county of Lanark
Moses Brownlee, Blast furnace man, Widower of Agnes Methven, 1885 Sept. 18, Coalbank (or Coatbank) cottage, 71 years old, parentage unknown. Cause of death Senility. Informant: Isabella A. Brownlee - granddaughter.

And I think that is all I know about it. Thanks again for all your help.

Hi Connie

If you have saved the various images to your hard disk you would be able to post them to the board here so that we could see the originals and help decipher some of the addresses.
Some of the places are obvious such as the 1871 census where you are almost right. The place is almost certainly Cambusnethan and it was an area which was almost entirely coal mining, ironstone mining and iron blast furnaces shipping their output on the Coatbridge canal to the Forth & Clyde canal. The village of Cambusnethan has been almost swallowed up by the Motherwell/Wishaw conurbation and may not appear on modern maps.
If you go to the 'How To' guides here you can find out how to post images.

Hi Connie

Can't read them all but here's my best shot :

1841 I think Fairprance is Fairgreave

1851 - Rethington could be Rutherglen. Not sure about the first part of the address but could be (Old?) Blaes or Braes Row/s

1861 - place of birth - maybe Cambuslang

No doubt others will have some ideas too.

Best wishes

1841 Could be Fairgrieve

1851 - I'd say Rutherglen. I think the address is Calder Braes Row

1861 - I think Cambuslang as well

Hi Connie

Thanks for putting these up. It helps when you know the places they are writing about.

You have most of the details so I skipped that.

James " " 14
Robert " " 10
William " " 8

1861

Death Certificate
Most you could read but
Address Coalbank Cottage
Parents unknown
Death registered by grand daughter Isabella A Brownlee

I've just been searching for reltives in the same places more or less although a year or two earlier and, like Moses and Agnes, several of their children did not survive.
We even found a set of triplets but only one survived past infancy.
They had a hard, hard life back then.

Hope this has set you on the right track.

Does not help in the slightest but I had a look at the death entry yesterday to see if it could help and I wrote Coatbank Cottage as place of death.

I would say this is correct as it was right next door to where his son David was living in 1881

Later................Just realised this would mean his grandaughter Isabella Arthur Brownlee was only 13 when she registered his death.
Unless he had another Isabella A grandaughter.

Thank you all for your help in figuring out what it says. Does anyone have any additional suggestions about where and how to search for Moses' parents? Unless I missed something some one said earlier, if I did please point it out to me again, I just don't know where to look. Thanks.
