Robert Bruce b. 1648 Lonmay

Post by darylrodger » Mon Jun 18, 2007 10:00 pm

Hi,

Can anyone help me find details regarding my ancestor Robert Bruce ? He was born in 1648 in Lonmay, Aberdeenshire. He died in Oct 1730. He was married to Isabella Elspeth Buchan in 1687. His son Robert was born on 5th Apr 1688.

Thanks,

Daryl :)

Hi Daryl
You are back in the period when, as far as I've found, you need to spend a good while raking around in various archives, digging away, following leads and hunches, all in the hope of turning up one little extra piece of information!

Have you checked the OPRs for siblings to son Robert? These sometimes contain little bits of extra info.

Have you looked to see if there are any Kirk Session records for the parish? Folk can turn up as elders, as "poor" requiring support, as tradesmen asked to do a bit of work on church property, as witnesses to someone elses's bad behavior or as the persosn responsbile for a bit of bad behaviour!
If it is a small parish, sometimes there is a better chance of the name you are looking for turning up. You can read these on the PCs at NAS on Virtual Volumes, or some originals are still kept at local archives, with digital copies being at NAS.

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi again Daryl
Just checked - it seems you are out of luck with the Kirk Session:
CH2/251 Lonmay Kirk Session 1709-1905

...and even looks like you are beyond OPR territory for Robert senior's generation in that parish, but at least his children should be there:
219. LONMAY
219/1 B 1687-1758 M 1687-1773 D 1716-21 and 1792
219/2 B1758-1821 M 1776-1820 D -
219/3 B 1820-54 M 1820-54 D -

Have you tried the wills on SP, just in case?

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Daryl
The only entries I'm finding for your Robert junior on IGI are submissions.
  • Robert OR Bruice Bruce
Birth: 05 APR 1688 Lonmay, Aberdeen, Scotland
    Parents:
    Father: Robert Bruce
    Mother: Isabella OR Elspet Buchan
Have you had a look at the original OPR to see if he is there? A search on Scotlands People for Robert or Br*ce Br*ce born 1688, Aberdeen, is not showing any results. Whoever submitted the above date to IGI must have seen it somewhere.... but where??

The 1687 marriage is also a submission on IGI, but no sign on SP.
  • Robert Bruce
    Birth: 1648 Lonmay, Aberdeen, Scotland
Death: OCT 1730 Lonmay, Aberdeen, Scotland
    Marriages:
    Spouse: Isabella OR Elspet Buchan
    Marriage: 1687 Lonmay, Aberdeen, Scotland

Submssions on the IGI are entries which have been added by family tree researchers and as such are sometimes reliable, but sometimes not. Extracts on the IGI have been taken directly from the OPRs and although they sometimes suffer from the odd mistranscription, they are usually pretty reliable.

Best wishes
Lesley

Oh thank you so much! I have been trying to connect up my family with the said Robert Bruce. I have the monumental inscription and also some information from a very early Poll Tax book. Would be more than happy to share.
