John Wylie of Malgrundour

Post by orchard » Fri Aug 17, 2007 12:34 am

My ancestor John Wylie was born abt 1818 at Malgrundour, Scotland. Can anyone please help me find this place? John later married Mary Porter (born abt 1822). They emigrated to Australia in 1839 on the Fairfield. They had 6 children. John died at Langhorne's Creek, South Australia on 21 Apr 1876. Mary died 21 Mar 1877.
I would welcome any info you can share with me about John and Mary and their families.

Hi Orchard,

I have looked at a number of map and gazeteer websites with a search facility, and none of them show a Malgrundour. One of the gazeteer websites had a "similar spelling" facility. That didn't show any useful answers either.

On checking the online IGI, there is a marriage to a couple of these names in 1823 on Paisley Abbey parish, and a daughter Martha born to them in 1828. If this is the couple you are looking for, then it questions the approximate birthyears that you have for them. Or, on the other hand it could be a different couple of the same names.

All the best,

AndrewP

Hi Andrew.
My John and Mary had 6 children:
Eliza, Margaret, John, William, Mary Elizabeth and Sarah Anne.
I have discovered a slight discrepancy in details.
The Bio index says that John Wylie b abt 1818 in Maldgrundour married Mary nee Brown. Other records I have gave me the names of their children. The mother of at least on of those children is identified as Mary Porter.
My John Wylie was only married once as far as I can find.

Hi there
We seem to have two posts with the same "mystery place" here - just so folk do not get confused or duplicate efforts, here is the other one:

Sorry Lesley.
I entered the info yesterday and it said all was well. When I came to follow a link to a message today I was told the topic didn't exist so I entered it again. Is there a way we can combine the two?

Hi Orchard
No need for aplologies! :D
Unfortunately the forum software is not able to join separate threads together - the only way to make the connection between two is to add links as I've done here. (if only I had £1 for the number of times we've wished you could "sellotape" two threads together!... )

With any luck folk will concentrate their replies into one of the threads so that all the answers to your query are there for you in the one thread.
:D
Best wishes

Thanks Lesley.
Have found some links with a person looking for John Wylie of Maulgundor in Dumfriesshire. I wonder if you or anyone else can help me find it?
