Robert Wood

Post by Alcluith » Tue Dec 21, 2004 6:18 pm

Hi Jack

It was Robert and Jean's son Robert Wood that Married Catherine Nicolson in 1853, he wis christned in 1836 in Barony so he was quite young.

I do get a bit confused myself with all these Robert's I'll need to do a bit more work on them to get it clear in my head again.

Just another bit of the Saga - Robert and Catherine Wood and some of the family moved to Newcastle where their daughter Rose Ann Wood married Robert Charles Usher in 2nd Dec 1882 .
Burns, Quinn - Glasgow, N.Ireland
McLeod, Mackay, Nicholson, McNeil - Skye
James, McLeod, Sinclair, Smith - Renton
Davidson,Adie, Gibb - Aberdeen
Jolly Wishart - Angus
Usher - Newcastle
Mullen, Roe - Dublin
O'Donnell - Ireland, Alexandria

Funny you should ask because I've been working on Ships and stuff quite a lot lately.

It's possible that he worked mostly during the day on the "Puffers" returning home very frequently from wee jaunts to Dumbarton, "The Port", Greenock, Gourock or further afield ... Campbeltown.

My own great grandfather was a tugboat stoker and he was never very far from home.

In the time period you're talking about James could have worked for David Hutcheson & Co which was taken over by David MacBrayne in 1879. But, of course, there were many dozens of private operations with, probably no extant records.

I'm not aware of any Trade Associations for Stokers or Ships Firemen in the 19th century but I recently managed to track down someones elusive ancestor in the subscription book of the Greenock Seaman's Friends' Society. There is also a slight possibility the Railways Trade Association for Firemen may have encompassed all steam vessels. The Mitchell may have some info.

I am surprized that death at sea report wasn't more helpful. From 1891 these reports were meant to include the name of ship, port of registration, and crew rating, with this info it may be possible to track down the various crew lists and any "Tickets" he picked up in 30 years.

Happy Hunting.

P.S. I enjoyed your website that's a great wee script they have to display gedcoms.

Hi Andy,

Nice to have you on talkingscots.

Didn't know there was such a book as "subscription book of the Greenock Seaman's Friends' Society". Is it available at the Watt Library?

Next time you are there could you please check the book for me?
John Ferguson (born 1856) and his brother Fergus Ferguson (born 1860). They were both listed as seamen on the census records. On the 1881 census John was on board the "Flying Sylph" a tugboat at the Greenock docks. His wife and children were living at 33 Lyndoch Street. Haven't found any info on Fergus other than his birth and marriage (he got married 1893 in Glasgow) Their parents John and Isabella are still my brick wall.

Thanks,
Ina

Hi Ina, Seasons Greetings and may I be the very first to wish you a happy EASTER.

I probably won't make it up to the Watt until it reopens after the holidays but I'll certainly have a look.

There are oddles of wee gems up at the Watt, I came across the subscriptions a few weeks ago, the records are a bound volume of all records from 1829 to 1915-ish.

For such a small place it's amazing the amount of stuff there is. There's even a bound volume of Greenock Academy prize winners from 1855. And the Cricket Club records from 1862.

I'd quite happily move in tomorrow!!!

Jack's right, something is amiss (an unmarried missus),

Before we go any further we've got to find out whether Robert and Catherine Nicholson are yours. If they are then Robert and Jean Gray can't be yours.

Robert and Catherine Nicholson married in 1853 and produced:

1. HELEN WOOD - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Birth: 24 OCT 1860 Hutchesontown, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland

2. MATILDA WOOD - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Birth: 21 JAN 1863 Old Monkland, Lanark, Scotland

3. ROBINA WOOD - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Birth: 16 DEC 1864 Old Monkland, Lanark, Scotland

4. CATHERINE WOOD - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Birth: 23 MAR 1856 Bothwell, Lanark, Scotland

5. ROSE ANN WOOD - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Birth: 22 AUG 1858 Bothwell, Lanark, Scotland

Jack found them in the 1861 census.

However, he also found Robert, son of Robert and Jean Gray, in 1861 so, obviously, they both can't be your Robert.

Fairly sure this is Jean (Gray) Wood in 1881:

Rel: Visitor
Occ: Milliner
Robert WILSON U 11 M Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
Rel: Visitor
Occ: Scholar
Margaret WILSON 9 F Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland

We know that Robert and Jean's son was born in Lanarkshire (the other was Irish).

Using the 1881 census for reference there are only 5 Robert Woods born 5 years either way of 1837 in Lanark. One is staying with parents James and Jean so not yours.

Of the other 4 one is married to a Marion and has a son, Charles. He'd be my first choice. Indeed a quick check for Robert Wood marriage to Marion between 1861 [he was single in the census] to 1881 shows that Robert age 25 married Marion Sharp in 1861, his parents Robert and Jean Gray.

Two Children listed in IGI:

1. ROBERT WOOD - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Male Birth: 15 MAR 1864 Milton, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland

2. ELIZABETH MILLER WOOD - International Genealogical Index
Gender: Female Birth: 09 MAY 1862 Milton, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland

Here they are in 1881:

Dwelling: 509 New Keppoch Hill Rd
Census Place: Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland

Isabella WOOD 6 F Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland

Charles WOOD 3 M Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
Rel: Son

So now you've got to work back to find out which is yours.

Robert Wood/Catherine Nicholson

Post by Alcluith » Wed Dec 22, 2004 2:09 pm

Andy/Jack

Robert and Catherine Wood married 1853 with the children listed is definately mine their daughter Rose Ann Usher(Wood) is my wife's great grandmother born 22 Aug 1858 at Bellshill and buried in the Vale cemetry. Robert was listed as a collier/miner on her certificates. Roseanna Wood married in 1882 in Newcastle so I assumed they have moved from the mining community in Bellshill to one in Newcastle area.

I had done some research quite a while back but could not come to any conclusion about Robert's parents so must have went down some other branch. It is in my "to do" file.

For the exercise of checking security of TalkingScot I had to use some reasonable sound information so I picked on Robert Wood and Jean Gray for this file.

This has been very useful for me for it has given me a lot more information and when I print out all the posts. I now need tocompare all the good information that has been posted to what I am definate about and see where to go forward. When I do this I would like to pick up this thread again.

Again what had started as an security exercise has turned out to be extremeley helpful to me in a area of research I had on the back burner so

Rosanna Wood

Post by Alcluith » Wed Dec 22, 2004 4:17 pm

Andy

Here is Rosanna Wood working not far away from her future husband Robert Usher who was living at 10 Derby Street Westgate. Maybe the Ushers and Johnsons families knew each other.

Dwelling: 9 Summerhill Terrace
Census Place: Westgate, Northumberland, England

Rosanna WOOD U 22 F Renfrew, Scotland

Again the problem with relying on census information - here it states Renfrew when in fact it Lanark.
Its only recently that I found her when searching for the Ushers.

I should have searched for Robert Wood but as I said I have moved into another branch. Interestingly I got it so wrong with Robert and Catherine I thought they were born in Lanark not Ireland. It now means that I have another Irish branch in my wife's family: Burns, Quinn and now Wood not forgetting there spouses and of course my wife's own maiden name of Mullen.
