Hi Frances,
Where is she in the English census? Also, I'm a bit confused-- there must be a typo somewhere! With a birth year about 1876, either she was 5 (not 15) in the 1881 census, or you meant the 1891 census :!:

Is this all you know about her, or do you have any other information? What are you looking for, specifically?

All the best,
Sarah

Hello Sarah

Thank you for reading my post and for the reply. I am actually trying to help a friend find out more about Clara Ann O'Flynn.

What she knows so far is that Clara was born in Cork in 1876. She came to England worked in service and had her first child to a George Henry Martin In Bermondsy in 1896.

According to other family members Clara and George had a large number of children but only married several years after the last child was born in 1916.

So far we have been unable to find either Clara's BC or a MC between her and George. I have just found out this morning that on George's DC (1949) there is no mention of Clara , makes me wonder of indeed they were ever married.Clara died in 1944.

If Clara could be found on the 1901 census that would be a starting point but havn't had any success here either--the proverbial brick wall has been well and truly hit :? .

If you could make any suggestions as to where to go from here I would be very gratefull.

Kind Regards

Frances :)

Hello Frances,

We might need a bit more info to find her in 1901. Do you know George Martin’s year of birth and occupation.

Was that the 1881 or 1891 census where you found Clara and what were the details of that census record in regard to location, name and so on.

There’s a marriage on FreeBMD that might be her if she’s dropped the O’, that’s assuming this Clara married George Martin rather than the other George on the page.

Marriages Jun 1894
Bass Elizabeth Greenwich 1d1297
Flynn Clara Ann Greenwich 1d1297
Martin George Henry Greenwich 1d1297
Thornton George William Greenwich 1d1297

Again from FreeBMD here’s a child whose mother’s maiden name was Flynn. Bermondsy (ey?) was in St Olave District in 1913. Does a Margaret fit into the story?

Births Dec 1913
Martin Margaret W Flynn St.Olave 1d437

If she’s dropped the O’ she may be trying to Anglicise herself and it’s not impossible that she may have claimed to be English born in 1901.

Alan

Hello Alan

Thank you for the reply. I should have said in my last post that I was mistaken in my belief that Clara was found on the 1881 census  , I interpreted the information wrongly that I was given.

I will get back in touch with my friend to find out George's DB also his occupation.

I will check the Free BMD for your suggestions.

Thank you once again.

Kind Regards

Frances :)

Hi Frances,
Do you know the names of the children? Here is a family in Bermondsey, father Harry Martin, mother Clara. The ages and birthplaces are off though. Could George Henry have been married before and widowed? There is a big gap between the births of Samuel and Janey. Well, it's a bit of a stretch, since Clara's mother looks to be Sarah Evans, unless she was the mother of his first wife  But it's about all I can find. Do let us know if you find out any of the children's names and birthdates-- it will help to search for them.

1901
48 Marine Street, Bermondsey, London
Harry Martin, Head, 36, General Labourer, born Oxfordshire, Witney
Clara -do-, Wife, 35, born London, Bermondsey
Harry -do-, Son, 13, Labourer, born London, Bermondsey
Susan -do-, Daur, 9, born London, Bermondsey
Samuel -do-, Son, 8, born London, Bermondsey
Janey -do-, Daur, 2, born London, Bermondsey
Sarah -do-, Daur, 6 mo, born London, Bermondsey
Sarah Evans, M in law, 72, born London, Bermondsey

Sarah

:) Sarah, you're a marvel - thank you. You have now set me another problem - if Clara was born in Rotherhithe it must have been HER mother who came from Ireland - so my next task is to obtain Clara's birth certificate and see where that takes me. Manyy thanks again. Diana :D

Hi Diana,
Of course, people didn't always tell the truth on the census
Would her surname still have been O'Flynn? Or might that have been her mother's surname? Just asking because I can't find her under that name in 1891. Here is George, however, to console you

1891
Greenwich, Kent
Alexander J Martin, 55, Head, Greengrocer, born Kent, Deptford
Harriet A Martin, 49, Wife, born Midx ?olwrth
Albert S Martin, 20, Son, Painters labrer, born Kent, Greenwich
George H Martin, 16, Son, do, born do, do
Annie L Martin, 11, Daur, Schoolgirl, born do, do

[cheers]
Sarah
