I am trying to find birth and death dates for my ggrandfather Neil McKinnon. I know he was born in Tyree of parents Lachlan and Marion (McLean) about 1847. I have found lots of census information and details of marriages and children for Neil and his siblings but to date no birth records. I understand there may have been a split from the Church of Scotland in the islands during the 1840's and that records for the new Free Churches may not exsist.
His siblings were John bn abt 1843, Julian (Julie Ann) bn abt 1845, Dougald bn abt 1849, Donald bn abt 1851, Alexander bn abt 1853.
If anyone can help and point me in the right direction I would really appreciate it.
Is anyone else out there researching families with the names McKinnon or Dooris?
Many thanks Gail

Hi Gail
..and a warm welcome to Talking Scot
The Disruption happened in 1843 - a spilt in the established church resulting in the the Free Church of Scotland being formed. The actual Disruption happened in Edinburgh, although it had been brewing a good while prior to that and it had very far reaching effects to many areas of Scotland. See:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disruption_of_1843
So if your family went with the Free Church, (as did many of mine) then that would explain why you may not be finding any records between 1843 - 1855, as the OPR records on Scotlands People are from the established Church of Scotland.
Many of the Free Church Records are held at NAS (www.nas.gov.uk). Under normal circumstances I'd suggest a search of their catalogue, but these days it is either not working, times-out or is just so slow you can fall asleep waiting...for nothing to happen!
I believe a new catalogue is to appear soon. Meanwhile, it may be quicker phoning or emailing them!
