Not sure whether anyone interested will pick up on this since it is such an old thread.
Anyway, I came across this thread because I was trying to find out the location of Cowgaate in Gala.
It seems that it is now known as Overhaugh St, or at least part of it.
I found this reference in "The History of Galashiels" Robert Hall, Galashiels Manufacturers' Corporation. Page 107.
(I'm unsure of the date of the publication).
Quote "Passing down ** Brodie's Raw," or the *^Cowgate/' now termed Overhaugh Street, the.... "
The entire book has been transcribed by Google and can be found here..... http://www.archive.org/stream/historyga ... g_djvu.txt
If when you access that link, you press CTRL F and search for Cowgate, it should take you to the exact passage which is very descriptive of the entire area.

Hello Mary to answer your question the street that in Galashiels until the 1840s was known as the Cowgate is now Overhaugh Street, many older local residents still refer to Overhaugh street as the Cowgate. The best site for information about the Scottish Borders is the Borders Family History Society, who as it happens will later this year be moving into new premises in Overhaugh Street Galashiels.
I hope that has cleared it up for you
