Hi all,

I was looking at OPR's website for possible wedding dress ideas for my own wedding and chanced upon possible Chalmers relatives in Old Machar in 1806 and came across this wording:

"John Bonnar and Barbara Chalmers both in this parish signify their purpose of marriage. George Jaffray Elder being Cautioner."

There was no objection, so they were married the same day. I thought the minister would have performed the marriage, but there is no mention of one. Did elders also marry people? :? All of the entries on that page have a Cautioner in them.

Carol :D
Hi Carol,

It sounds like you've stumbled across some interesting historical records. The term "cautioner" in this context refers to the person who was responsible for guaranteeing the marriage would take place. This was generally a family member or close friend who would vouch for the couple, and they were usually present when the marriage took place. The minister may not have been mentioned, as they were usually a witness to the marriage, not the officiant.

Hope this helps!

Best,
Emma
