Tracey thanks for that info. It might be that John was a soldier, or maybe they just fancied a wee break

I'm sure if I wait long enough, something about him will just turn up.

The 1891 census shows John Linn age 37 in Falkirk as a publican, birth details :
born at sea nr New York.

The information I've collected puts his date of birth varying from 1850 to 1854, so sometime in between 1850 and 1854 his mother was on a ship going to or from New York. I've had a look at shipping lists through Olive Tree and Castle Garden with no luck. Are there any other shipping lists that don't involve a 2nd mortgage to access Ancestry.com? All roads seem to lead to them in the end :( and I'm saving up for the new census info when it's released!

Regards

Hi Pinkshoes,
Try http://www.nationalarchivist.com/index.cfm where you will see "Births,Marriages and Deaths At Sea 1854-1890" once you click on Birth,Marriages and Deaths.
You may be lucky!

Thanks for that Mcgrice. I've had a quick look and right enough there's a male Linn in the 1858-1865 section. I think that might be a bit late though, as according to all the info I have he was born nearer 1852. Reluctant to spend £7 on credits (tightfist) but I'll have a closer prowl and see if there might be anything else of interest that I could use the credits up on.

Thanks again.

Hi Pinkshoes
Have you tried the Overseas section of 18370nline?
I've had a bit of luck with that recently and you may be lucky searching back to 1852 - means buying the credits though :?

Hi Ladybird I haven't thought of that. I relented and spent the £7 a few days ago - no further forward with Linn really, but did find what I think is a passport application for another relative - not connected to Linn. Still have some credits left with Nat Arch which will be transferred to 1837 to I can have a look. Thanks for the idea - will let you know if I'm lucky.
