Advice on Good Geneology Software

I am a Legacy man

too. I tried a few different programmes, but this one came up trumps. As Jack said you can see up to 15 children on the page, and it also has the feature of showing the parents of the person you click on and their wains. I recently upgraded from the free version to the paid up bells and whistles version, with added features. It also has a good variety of reports and "books" and timelines. I wish I bought the full version earlier

I'm considering changing from FTM. Althogh it does the organisation well its rubbish when it comes to graphic displays of trees.
Can Legacy do a tree for a single line of the family by extracting it from the whole tree?

How does it deal with 2 or more marriages. Can it show them simultaneousl? FTM deals with each individually and conceals the others.

Tried a freebie, limited function vesion but it didn't answer my questions, probably because I hadn't reached the problem family lines at that point.!

Any additional comments and ideas would be useful to sevearl of us I think.

You can show the two marriages simultaneously by using the Split Screen view.

As far as I know it can do just one family line, although I still havent tried all the bells and whistles in the programme yet. I recently sent a book style report for my cousin and it only concentrated on her line. It depends on who you choose to view. If you use the preferred start up person (in my case moi

) it will show the whole line, you also have the option of using ancestors or descendants in the reports. One day I will get a full heid on what the programme will do, but it looks good even on my limited knowledge

I personally havent used the split screen as yet, but I should to have a look at some of my long losts who remarried or just lived in sin

One of the coolest features is being able to download from ScoltandsPeople directly into Legacy. You can then assign the birth, death, marriage, cenus etc. to multiple people and any number of events. The nice thing is that there is only one copy of the certificate taking up valuable space on my computer.

I recently downloaded the free Legacy version to try it out. Everything was going fine and I was tidying up a lot of records and adding notes etc. Then when I opened it up one time I found my Dad was now the "wife " of another guy!! It wouldn't let me edit his gender and I had to delete him and re-enter him. It has put me off a bit as I don't want to put a lot of info in and then the thing go haywire on me. Anybody else had any glitches like that ?

It wouldn't let me edit his gender and I had to delete him and re-enter him.

Not sure why that glitch happened but it is easy to fix. Just right click on the person and "unlink" them from their current "spouse" then go to the correct spouse, right click>Add husband>link to existing person.

No deleting needed!

I've been using Legacy for years and I still find out new things about it regularly! I think like all genealogy software, which is capable of many complex tasks, there is a lot to learn and it takes a good while to really get to know the program well, and get it to do what you want!! Often you find you have suddenly hit a very steep learning curve when things go awry!
