Have just received marriage certificate for Robert Hourston 1902 West Derby and it's looking very like this is my man!
My Robert's father's name was James and he was a Master Mariner. On the certificate father's name is James and he is a mariner! $\:D/$

According to the family story he married a catholic girl and was never heard of again. The wife of this Robert looks like she was born in Ireland. Her name was Margaret Duggan, father Patrick Duggan. On census for 1891 in Bootle I found a Margaret Duggan, 40, born c1851 Ireland,her daughter Margaret,born c1880,ireland and a son Patrick, 6, born Kirkdal Liverpool.
On the IGI there is an entry for the birth of a Margaret Anne Duggan, 26/6/1880 in Dublin, parents were Patrick Duggan and Margaret Doyle Duggan.

So where do I go from here? - Irish records?

Thanks to help from another website I think I some children of Robert and Margaret Hourston.
These look promising as Robert's mother and grandmother were called Isabella and one of his nieces was called Beatrice.
Another piece of the puzzle completed perhaps?
