Once again Jack...you AMAZE me!!!!!!!

I still have really digested all the info that you found....

I did find the Pitt family on the 1871 census....Alexander's wife's name was listed as of all things "Alex"...when it was Helen! The 3 children were there....Mary, John and Janie.

I could not find the children on the 1881 census. I had seen another record of an orphanage and wondered if they would have turned up in one....

Again thank you so much for all you have found for me so far...love ya!!!

Me again...
I did find some info on James Galloway on the 1851 census. He must have died before the 1861 census, but I found his wife, Isabella, and 3 of their children, Thomas, Christine (in 1851 she was Christian) and James. Seems young son, James, also has died. In 1871 I found Isabella, her son Thomas and a daughter of his, Agnes, no mother's name was listed for her. Each year had a different address. I could not find any of them in the 1881 census. Maybe they moved to another country or died?

Interesting note though, Thomas became a Baker just like his Dad and Grandfather. One census listed him as a Lour Baker...not sure what Lour is???? I have seen the word Loun in Old Scottish Occupations, meaning boy.

I found a death record for James Galloway. He died Jan. 18, 1857. It states his Mom, Elizabeth Campbell Galloway is also deceased. So she would have died between the 1851 census and Jan of 1857. Seems his young son, John, also died between 1851 and 1855...could not find a DC for him between 1855 and 1861.

Wonder if there was some type of epidemic going around Hamilton around 1856 and 1857, since James was only 41 when he died, his son between 5 and 9, even Elizabeth would have only been in her 60's?

If someone could have a "good" look at the death record for James Galloway...1857 deaths in Hamilton, Lanark (1/1/1857)..he is the 3rd one on the page and no matter how much I zoomed in, I could NOT read the cause of death.

Thanks
Karen

Jack..have found something I want you to take a look at...might be a long shot on the orphaned children of Helen Galloway and alexander Pitt!

If you do a look up for the 1881 census for an Ellen Pitt....you find her a "granddaughter" of a Mary Pitt who is 60 years old. There is a John McGee at 16 years old and even though he has the McGee name and said he was born in Ireland...he just might be John Pitt...he's the right age. Also living there is a Thomas Allan and his wife Jane and their young daughter Martha. Interesting that Thomas is a "shoemaker" just as was Thomas Pitt who died so young in 1872...he was married to a Margaret McGee.....hmmmmm Could this 60 year old Mary McGee be Margaret's Mom and she took in at least 2 of the Pitt children? By now the oldest Pitt girl would be about 18 and probably working, maybe as a servant.

Maybe a real long shot....

Hi Karen,
That was good finding James GALLOWAY's 1857 DC.
When next at Park Circus i'll have a look to see if i can make out the cause of his death. [it was Phthisis]
Which census year had son Thomas as a Lour Baker? Could it be Loaf?
Or Jour Baker - short for Journeyman Baker?
====
You have these censuses etc -
>1861 census 647 Ed 8 p 16 (Hamilton)
>16 Young Street.
>Isabella GALLOWAY, head, widow, 47, tambourer, b Hamilton, LKS
>Thomas GALLOWAY, son, u/m 22, j/man baker, b Hamilton, LKS
>Christina GALLOWAY, daur, u/m 20, --------------b Hamilton, LKS
>James GALLOWAY, son, u/m 17, silk weaver, b Hamilton, LKS

THOMAS GALLOWAY
AGNES RANKINE
Marriage: 29 DEC 1862 Hamilton, Lanark, Scotland
-one child-
AGNES RANKIN GALLOWAY - Birth: 18 OCT 1863 Hamilton, Lanark, Scotland

Agnes RANKIN, aged 21, died in 1863 at Hamilton.

>1871 census 647 Ed 17 p 27 (Hamilton)
>20 Quarry Road.
>Isabella GALLOWAY, head, 57, Tambourer, b Hamilton, LKS
>Thomas GALLOWAY, son, 30, Baker, b Hamilton, LKS
>Agnes GALLOWAY, gr-daur, 6, scholar, b Hamilton, LKS

But what happened to them all after 1871?
If i can manage it i'll try and find any MCs/DCs.
====
You have this census -
>1871 census 644-2 Ed 56 p 4 (St. John)
>7 Graeme St.
>Alexander PITT, head, 43, stable groom, b Leith, Edin.shire
>Helen PITT, 40, wife, -------------b Hamilton, LKS
>Mary PITT, daur, 9, scholar, b Glasgow, LKS
>John PITT, son, 7, scholar, b Glasgow
>Jeanie PITT, daur, 1, -------b Glasgow
>(can't see the family in Scotland 1881)

We now know why they weren't about in 1881 - both parents had died in 1874.
I don't know what happened to Alexr. & Helen's three children Mary, John, Jeanie either.
And again, if i can manage it i'll have a wee look for any MCs or DCs.
====
We can only think at present that Mary McGEE (60) in 1881 is Margaret McGEE's mother.
Ellen PITT (b.1870) was related to John PITT (b.1864) - she was his ½ niece.
But John PITT wasn't related to Mary McGEE (60), so i can see no reason why he'd be with her.
So perhaps John McGEE (16) in 1881 is Margaret's younger brother? And not John PITT?

The relationship should be to the household head, but i can't see how Ellen is a gr-daur to Thomas ALLAN.
Maybe just a wee bit confusion, and was meant to read that she is Mary's gr-daur.

1881 Census Place: Barony, Lanark, Scotland
Source: FHL Film 0203644 GRO Ref Volume 644-4 EnumDist 60 Page 13
Dwelling: 48 Bell Street
Thomas ALLAN M 48 M Ireland Rel: Head Occ: Shoemaker
Jane ALLAN M 44 F Ireland Rel: Wife [2nd wife?]
Mary MC GEE W 60 F Ireland Rel: Boarder
John MC GEE U 16 M Ireland Rel: Boarder Occ: Gutta Pucha Worker
Ellen PITT 10 F Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland Rel: Grand Daur Occ: Scholar
Martha ALLAN 3 F Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland Rel: Daur
--
As you know Helen (Ellen) PITT's wee sister Margaret had died aged 13 mos. in 1873.
And young Helen (Ellen) herself died aged 15 yrs. in 1885.

This is my take on the following census record!

1881 Census:
Barony, Lanark, Scotland
48 Bell Street
Thomas Allan, head, 48 born Ireland, occupation shoemaker
Jane Allan, 44 born Ireland, wife
Martha Allan, 3 born Glasgow, daughter
Mary McGee, 60 born Ireland, boarder
John McGee, 16, born Ireland, boarder, occupation Gutta Pucha Worker
Ellen Pitt, 10 born Glasgow, grand daughter, scholar.

I think Ellen is the daughter of Thomas and Margaret McGhee Pitt and living with her Grandmother, Mary McGee (Mary Ann Boyd McGhee) Jane might be Mary’s daughter or another relation or friend. Mary McGee and John McGee also had a son, William, born on May 2, 1858 High Church, Glasgow, Lanark.
I am wondering, how, ever Thomas Allan was related to Thomas and Margaret Pitt…I can almost bet that Thomas who was also a shoemaker either worked for or with Thomas Allan also a shoemaker.

Just not sure where the 16 year old John McGee fits in...maybe another realative from Ireland?

Not sure what you meant by Ellen Pitt (b 1870) was related to John Pitt (b 1864) - she was his 1/2 niece??????

The following are for the McCulloch family....Jane Young who married Jame McCulloch. It seems most of Jamees son's went into the printing or related to print business.

1881 Census:
96 Abercromby St, Glasgow, Chalmers, Lanarkshire
By now James has died
Jane McCulloch, 43, head, born Glasgow

Andrew McCulloch, 20, born Glasgow, Paper Ruler
John McCulloch, 16, son, born Glasgow, Bookbinder
James McCulloch, 13, born Glasgow, Message Boy Stationers
Margaret McCulloch, 11, daughter, born Glasgow, scholar
Thomas McCulloch, 9, born Glasgow, scholar

1891 census 644-4 Ed 1 p 20 (Glasgow - Chalmers)
96 Abercromby Street.
Jane McCULLOCH, head, ....., 53, ----------------------b Glasgow, LKS
James McCULLOCH, son,......, 23, general labourer, b Glasgow, LKS
Thomas McCULLOCH, son, ....,19, wire worker, b Glasgow, LKS
Maggie McCULLOCH, daur,......, 21, calenderer's girl, b Glasgow, LKS

1901 Census:
3 Wesleyan St., Glasgow Camlachie, Lanarkshire
James McCulloch, head, 33, born Glasgow, Printers Warehouseman
Margaret McCulloch, sister, 31, born Glasgow, Housekeeper
Thomas McCulloch, 29. Brother, born Glasgow, Wire weaver
Christina McAulay, 29, visitor, born Glasgow, Thread Baller

1901 Census:
This could be a sibbling…not proven yet
171 Bellfield St, Glasgow, Dennistoun (Dennistown?)
Andrew McCulloch, head, 40, born Glasgow, Stationery Shopkeeper
Christina McCulloch, wife, 38
James McCulloch, son, 11
Archibald McCulloch, son, 9
Mary McCulloch, daughter, 5
