Its a good pratice to run the virus scan as often as possible and it will keep your computer running in tip top shape

I have to congratulate the Moderators of TS for doing such an outstanding job of getting rid of these unwanted posts. This board is one of the safest ones around.

You have to be careful of clicking on anything on any board even when is seems innocent.

About a year and a half ago, I was looking in on some board somewhere, reading whatever it was about, when I came to a place that said "Click here to get results of News Poll". Wanting to see the results of the news poll I clicked on it.

Was I in for a surprise. Everything happened very fast. What I saw was a naked man lying on something, maybe a sofa, but he jumped up off the sofa and started yelling maniacally "Look at Me! Look at me!". At the same time, McAfee was sending me warnings that I had been infected. As fast as McAfee deleted the worm of whatever it was, more of them popped up. I frantically tried to get the yelling man off, but instead I got multiple screens of him, and my computer froze. My husband walked into the room and didn't help things any by saying, "Sheila what are you doing "as he looked at the screen. I don't remember if I answered him or not.

With the controls to my computer frozen, I did what anyone would do. I turned it off at the switch and pulled the plug. I left it off for about five minutes, and started it again, immediately running the virus scan. McAfee deleted about 10 worms, which it labeled mischievous. Luckily that was all there was to it, no permanent damage to my computer, but it did give me a fright. Apparently the worm was designed to shock, not to ruin a computer.

The AG and Moderators of TS do our best to keep this board as virus free as possible,but there's always the occasion that some links are slipped in, but fear not their not hanging around for long.

I know this is a very serious subject and I'm not suppose to be laughing at your experience, but I can't help myself. I can just see your husband walking into the room, when he heard a man's voice yelling "look at me" and you trying to explain why you click on a porn link in the first place! PRICELESS......

With the invention of the internet, we've all found ourselves placed in an uncomfortable situation at one time or another. But your description struck me funny, because I've been in your shoes many times as a Moderator and then an AG member of TS. Goodness, it doesn't matter what timeof day or night these type of posts strike the board. I've found myself blushing at some of the most inappropriate times with my husband in the background, asking me now what?

You are very fortunate, as there's a category of absolute and complete numpties out there who don't stop at shocking you, but obtain their extremely sad form of enjoyment by trashing your hard disk , or taking control of your 'puter, and using it as a "slave", or, even worse, installing software on your 'puter, which allows them, via the sites accessed and the keys pressed, to learn and use your passwords........

A lot can be done to stop them in their tracks by running an anti-virus, anti-worm, anti-Trojan package such as Norton or McAfee, - probably the two most well known paid for packages, - or AVG, - one of the top free packages; but whatever such package is used, it's only as good as the way that it's set up on your 'puter.

In other words, the setup must involve frequent, preferably daily full checks of your system, and automatic updates of the virus/worm/trojan data files from Norton, McAfee, AVG, etc., etc., along with a "firewall".

Sometimes this can be a drag, especially if the automatic system checks, and updates haven't been automated, and the firewall creates some problems, but, believe me, please, any such hassle, including sometimes the need to reinstall the software involved, just pales into insignificance compared to the "loss" of your hard-disk, however good have been your back-up procedures, - but that's another subject !!! ..................

Sometimes also, this whole process can be a drag in terms of the manner in which the virus programme checking procedures can slow down the overall performance of your 'puter; to which my standard response is, - "what do you want?, - a virus free 'puter, - or potential major problems?!?! ..........."

Norton and McAfee, as do other packages, have a firewall facility, including the facility to check incoming emails, so that any problem attachment can be zapped; and will also prevent access to your computer by known worms and Trojans, most especially a potential problem if you have a broadband connection, so that you are permanently "broadcasting" your computer's IP address to the www

Again, packages such as Norton and McAfee will virus check any WordDoc or similar file before it is loaded on your 'puter ..........

In other words, please, please take the time, money (if required!), and effort required to install a fully featured anti-virus/worm/trojan package that also includes a fire wall !! ........

Hi everyone!

After reading your posts I decided not to take any chances and went out and bought Norton again...it does slow things down, but since I use the computer for work as well as family research, I'd rather be safe than sorry.

Unfortunately, I just replaced my Norton Works with the free version of AVG last week and don't know if that only covers emails coming in. I get confused with what I have and don't have so will investigate and hopefully don't have any bugs. Many thanks again.

I suspect that you only get incoming email coverage if you upgrade from the free version to APG Professional, which costs money, - check the AVG site ....

I use McAfee Security Suite, which upgrades constantly, sometime more than once a day. It does slow things down when I first turn my computer on, and whenever it is updating, but I think that is a small price to pay.

I don't believe that it is possible to ever get "Total Protection", but I am satisfied with McAfee. One of the more recent features it has is, in the last 8 months or so, it to warn you before you click on a site, as Red, yellow, grey or green sites.

That Mischievous Virus ,or Worm that I got was unusual. I have never come across anything like it again, though I have run into the occasional Porn site. When I do run into something like that, I always run the virus scan. There are usually cookies attached. I have an automatic brief virus scan that checks at start-up and a full virus scan that is run every week. The full virus scan often picks up infections that I am totally unaware of having, or knowing where I received them.

It is a shame that a small minority of malicious people in the world try to spoil things for the rest of us.

P.S. This is not meant to be an advertisement for McAfee. I am sure that there are many other programs out there just as good. I am only giving my personal experience with them.
