If you apply through GRO it is usually about a week - tends to depend how busy they are. When you apply online you are told about when it will be processed (I have found it is usually earlier).

Living in Australia I haven't ordered through the county offices but I am led to understand thay are quicker than GRO & as they have the "original" records can perhaps be more accurate :?:

Most of our Australian records are as per the 1855 Scottish ones - I was so disappointed with my first English death certificate I have never ordered another, but I do use their marriage and birth certificates.

Andy,

I would agree with Trish about English certificates; death certificates are largely useless for genealogical purposes.
However I woild order the certificates from GRO; they are quick and efficient. Ones I've ordered from local record offices are hand written copies of the entry and I have had ones which have been mis-transcribed.

You could look at the marriage record at the local record office but it could be time consuming if you didn't know where the marriage took place.

Regards,
Meg

I recieved the marriage certificate this morning in the post. It doesnt tell you much to be honest, I was hoping it would still say if Andrew was involved in the war in some way as some soldiers did stay on until 1921. Andrew is aged 29 and Lena is aged 36 and she was a Cook.

What I am wondering is, did Andrew stay with this family during the war and then fall in love with Lena during that time or perhaps met her there while on service.

It is possible that Andrew served with the Army Service Corps, but I have no way of telling unfortunately.
