You shouldn’t have to go to this much trouble to read such a poor image. On the image posted earlier even parts of the printed lines are missing. If the printed lines aren’t visible what hope is there of seeing fine pen strokes? What’s happening at the moment is that guesses are being made as to what’s in those empty spaces.
I’m sure that if they were made aware of the importance of that particular section of the document, and the amount of effort that has gone into joining the dots, that SP would provide a better copy or perhaps one in a different format such as JPG where these problems do not arise. Then is the time to tackle the handwriting.

Hello Ina, Allan,
I think if you read through the entire thread you should pick up on the fact, that a enhanched image was asked for from Scotlandspeople, the result being that they could not enhance the image, as the problem was in the registers hand writing.
The image was then sent to the Writing Archivist, who by using the three deaths on the certificate to compare letters, she was able to confirm to the best of her ability that the name is most likely indeed John, i concur with her answer, having now looked at the third death on the certificate which is no doubt John, all written by the same register.
Regards,
Jonn.

Hello John,
I did see your comments earlier and I really don’t understand why SP did not supply a replacement image when asked or why they would be making comments about handwriting readability or suggestions about what particular words are when it is not their job to do so. Was this contact made through normal channels via a contact form and email or by some other method?
Their job is to supply an image in some format or another which is as readable to the customer as if they were looking at the original register page or at least its microfilm. Perhaps the image you have is the best that can be provided for that particular page using the 1 bit B&W format. I’m sure that if it was replaced by something in JPG format as the OPRs are supplied the difference would probably be quite startling.
However you have chosen not to follow this up and of course you are the only one who needs to be satisfied by the process you have adopted. However I don’t really consider your process to be something that should have been undertaken before fully pursuing a readable copy of the source document from the organisation that has been paid to supply one.
All the best,
Alan

Oh Deary me...we are no further ahead...It is sooo frustrating... 'deano' who gave me the Cert seems to have gone 'off the air', maybe illness or somethig... so I have have another look at the piece of signature you have posted, look at the Margaret on it, (Margaret More) there is a similarity with the 'g' there, to that of the Christian name= possible ??? (what shortened name begins with G?) or something of the sort ?
What say you... clever people.
He still is very much a mystery, and holding everything up !!!
I am sure there is someone out there ... there must be... who knows who he is.
Pretty Please?????
