Jack,
Thanks for all you have done - you have done much more than I expected and I really appreciate it. I do think we are at a dead end but I will keep tinkering.
I will try to contact the East Lothian council to be sure there is not a possibility there.
I may try to find someone in that immediate area with a hope they may know of local records but I am sure it is a long shot.
Wish there was something I could do for you here in Canada. I feel indebted to you.
All the best to you.
Hugh

Re: Pollock
I realise this is a very old post but I have quite a lot of information on James Pollock & Margaret Cunningham of Pollockshaws & Mearns & their children together with their descendants. Their children were James (b 19/9/1824), William (b 29/8/1826), Elizabeth (b 29/7/1830), Mary (b 15/3/1834), Susan (b 12/7/1842) & Hugh Stirling (b 4/8/1845). I hope you are still interested in the research & still reading the posts & will get in touch

Don't even know why I'm doing this but here goes......was curious to note another HUGH STIRLING POLLOK birth in August 1845 on the IGI in Mearns, Renfrewshire to parents James Pollock and Margaret Cunningham. Thought just maybe James might turn out to be another sibling to fit into your lineup with the huge holes in it. Sorry to say I can't prove that is so as it turns out the this father James seems to have died before 1855. He's there in 1851 and I just found the DC for the above named Hugh Stirling and he died in 1860's and his father was dead at that time. There are several children born to this couple many of them right in Mearns so they certainly fit into the locality profile. I wonder if you've any idea where your Hugh Sterling got his middle name from??? I ask as when I finally uncovered the DC for this one b. in 1845 the informant was a b-i-l with name of McCall. Following up on that there is a MC in Mearns in 1856 of Hugh's sister (that also shows their father James as dec'd) to William McCall and it's quite glaringly obvious that the minister of the Mearns church who performed the ceremony was named HUGH STIRLING!! Coincidence? I wonder..........
So maybe they are related and maybe not.![]()
Best wishes
Jean
