$1.67  for a can of soup, that's what I call "highway robbery"

I'll be looking up the car accident first. Wished I owned a laptop to tell ya about it, but you'll just have to wait until I get back in town.... :)

Hi Carol,

Back in town...

Interesting development and one that I didn't anticipate

But first

The Lowell Sun had two editions back then, the morning and the 7pm. I was able to find abt 98% of the articles. The pictures were awfully dark and when I tried to lighten them up, it faded other faces out :? There wasn't an article about the car accident on 24 Dec. The Lowell Sun didn't print an edition on Chrimstmas Day and by the 26th this could very well be the reason there was an accident in the first place?

Lowell Sun 26 Dec.

CITY, E MASS ROW OVER SAND AS ICY STREETS IMPERIL TRAFFIC

Vehicles Crawl Over Treacherous Roadways; Pedestrians Slip and Slide to Work-Bus Co. Has San But Wants City's Is Refused

LOWELL-As a freezing rain turned streets into ice-covered treacherous surfaces that brought traffic to a near-standstill and left hundreds of workers stranded for considerable periods in the out-lying sections, a behind-the-scenes controversy raged over responsibility for sanding the highways. The manager of Eastern Mass Co. would make no reference to the controversy. Acting Mayor Sweeney was not as reticent

"About two weeks ago, when similar conditions visited the city, Eastern Mass. Street Railway sent its trucks to the city yard in Broadway and took nearly all of our sand, with the result being today that we have no more and no money to buy it with," said Sweeney.

Winters here in New England can be brutal and without any sand it would certainly equal nightmare driving conditions!
